okay so - *why* is double cover in quaternion rotations considered by some a natural/physical/geometric truth about rotations?

I know the dirac plate trick and the spinning cube with the ribbons, but these don't seem natural/inherent to rotations or SO(3) at all! isn't that just an SU(2) thing?
