Tl;dr3: The only way to fix this, aside from root-and-branch reform of our legislative & electoral institutions, is for people to go to jail for the rest of their lives for these unprecedented unconstitutional crimes. I won't hold my breath. We haven't ever done that, in our long history.

The stakes have been raised. The Democrats have got to run on putting these people in prison. They have to. Jobs, food, all the rest, but shooting a mother in the head on a public street? None of this Garland stuff. "The full force of the government will be brought to bear" on this and similar.
