A tangent from Dan Strauss notes that much of the cost of the Cultural Connector comes from fixing streets in Pioneer Square that need to be fixed anyway.

i don’t wade into this because frankly i a) don’t want to deal with the grief and b) no one who needs to hear the take is going to be persuaded by me, but there are people who need to decide for themselves if their left-wing beliefs are a bohemian cultural affectation or are they a *politics*

I think when the port or businesses complain about congestion, they're really more worried about their ability to drive to work than the delivery of goods.
I know it's not the main focus of urbanism and reducing car-dependency, but it seems completely deranged that the highway system ostensibly exist to partly facilitate shipping but we have zero problem with private commuters completely backing up the shipping lanes for several hours every single day

Honestly I think the fact that ebikes offer a revelatory amount of freedom for kids and teens in the region, rather than forcing them to be trapped at home or chaffeured by parents, is as much a feature in the backlash as the very real safety issues with using them in mixed traffic.

Ebikes are a revolution for kids and teens in North County San Diego, something like a perfect market for them. Affluent, extremely hilly and with year-round great weather. Kids that 5 years ago would've been trapped at home without having a parent chaffeur them can now travel independently
