Mississippi is still in the 60s.
Beth Israel was burned down in 1874.
The congregation moved in 1967. The new synagogue was bombed by the KKK. In 2005, it housed Katrina refugees. In 2013, antisemites smashed the windows. The building is a stop on the Mississippi Freedom Trail.
Suspect arrested in predawn fire that left parts of Mississippi’s largest synagogue in charred ruins

A fire heavily damaged Jackson’s only synagogue before dawn Saturday – the same house of worship that was firebombed by the Ku Klux Klan in 1967 because the rabbi had been an advocate for civil…

And pour one out for the great Barry Atwater, who played the vampire, but was a mainstay of 60s and 70s TV, including the classic "Monsters are Due on Maple Street."
January 8, 1972. A few days after this countdown, ABC-TV would broadcast the horror movie "The Night Stalker" and introduce the legendary character Carl Kolchak. At the time, it was the highest rated made-for-TV movie ever, and would go on to inspire "The X-Files". Take it away, Jezz! #AT40

Please stop yelling at my friend @radiofreetom.bsky.social. This is a clarifying and encouraging thread, and if I were still an opinion editor, I'd ask him to expand it into a column for me.
I wonder what any of you would do differently in your lives if I said "yes, America is at this moment a fascist nation."
Because I tell ya what, if I thought so, I'd be doing things differently. For starters, I wouldn't bother worrying about elections or candidates or whom to support. /1

Time to start quoting @kenwhite.bsky.social : Now come the people who arrive two hours into the movie and want to know who all the characters are and what's going on

It's all in the threads, friends, read back
Can you explain why you are so concerned about whether the current US authoritarian regime is called "fascist" or not? What is it about that word that troubles you so much?

I'm sorry, but "we didn't get Medicare for All" isn't the same as "therefore, it's fascism."

Now and then, some of the folks on the left let slip what *they* mean by "fascism" - that is, "not getting the policies we prefer."
Neocons can wax poetic about change and responsibility, but nothing is clear. Union power? Medicare for All? Universal childcare? Climate justice? Platitudes and cliches are worse than “drama” and “doom.”
Many of you have become drama-addicted doomers, and you seem to think it's important for the rest of us to join you.

Yes, things are bad. But change is within our power. Grow up. Act like sober, responsible adults in a democracy instead of cynical, all-is-lost teenagers.

Now get off my lawn.

I'm sorry, I can't keep doing that one over and over, but while there is a free media, opposition parties, functioning courts, and the glorious chaos of federalism, we are far, far away from fascism.
Mr. Nichols, if you are up for answering a question that you have probably addressed numerous times in various ways, but in a short list, what would be the most likely (by your estimation) red flags you would need to see to beginto have more serious concerns again?

It's incredibly demoralizing to constantly see the highest institutions of government and academia and the most important and widely seen news outlets knuckle under one after another, but then to see the gulf between that and the bravery of communities and neighbors and teachers - that's something

No, if you'd been more careful with names, voters of the United States might not have been so willing to create a giant, oppressive infrastructure based on "terrorism" that now has metastized into a massive arm of state power that tries to govern everything from immigration to turkey fryers.
Oh right, if we’d have just been more careful with our nomenclature Trump’s goons would have behaved!!

I fear this is why Dems will continue to lose. We have a toxic purity test that labels as traitor any Dem who reaches out to the middle, nor can welcome new folks who were formerly in the middle/right. We seem to forget that we lost, and we'll lose again, if we don't adjust our thinking/action.
