Very excited to support librarypunk, which is not only an informative, thoughtful podcast, but a thriving community of leftist library workers doing the important work of shitposting for our collective sanity.
We're doing a fundraising drive for one more year of librarypunk. Hosting and recording costs money, and we'd really appreciate your support to keep the show going. Everything we make will continue to be free for all, but we wanted to offer ways for people to show their support.

Telling folks to just "plug in to community" rn is well-meaning and if you can do that, wonderful. But most people are not super connected to community for many reasons. So, if you don't have community rn that's ok, consider finding 2-5 ppl you can form a pod with.

Today I get to make an exciting announcement! After years of work, San Francisco Public Library's alternative headings are now live. This list represents hundreds of hours of work and I'm proud of what we've done. Here is the list if your library would like to use it: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Book banning is real and is terrorizing teachers, librarians & students from marginalized identities now. It is worse than it has ever been. If you’re remembering your quaint “Celebrate Freedom. Read a Banned Book” T-shirt, adjust your perspective. You’ve brought an umbrella to a hurricane.

I've been thinking about physical media a lot lately. I've spent time collecting DVDs and CDs of some of my favorites over the past year and I feel like it has increased my enjoyment and appreciation for the things that I am consuming.

These are very good suggestions, but a few key ones are missing: attend library board mtgs and speak in favor (many are on zoom), donate $, and vote for measures and bonds to increase funding. Patrons have real power. Don't let a handful of bigots destroy your library.
One thing before tomorrow:

Use your local libraries.

Get your card.

Borrow books, manga, films, audios, ebooks.

Recommend titles for purchase (usually online).

Attend promoted activities.

Fill out those "How are we doing?" questionnaires.

Tell your kids that libraries are good.

They are.

In my opinion #schools actively destroy the love of reading by

Removing choice
Using a program like Accelerated Reader
Not hiring a #librarian
Having a lack of reading role models through the whole school
Making reading a form of punishment

I am a former incarcerated firefighter. I served in a California fire camp from 2009 to 2012.

Misinformation is afire on the internet, so here are facts about the prison firefighter program, all in one place.

A thread.

the “Elonia Musk” thing rests entirely on “ha ha what if he was a woman” and that is so self-evidently transphobic and misogynistic that I do not understand calling yourself progressive and unironically using it as an insult

Looks like we avoided a vote on the nonprofit shutdown bill today but are likely to see one tomorrow.

Your rep's office in DC is gonna be closed for the night, great time to leave a voicemail, especially if they were one of the Democratic yes votes last week (listed upthread)
OK, well as luck would have it they decided NOT to proceed with debate and vote on #HR9495 today.

Once again begging people to stop playing into parents rights by saying parents have the right to decide what their children get to read. Children have rights, and "parents rights" is a backdoor to book banning.

I’m a public librarian in a degenerating democracy, and I am pleading: Care about your library. Use it. See what programs and events it offers. And pay attention to its governing body. See who the trustees are. Consider running yourself. Libraries will need all the community support they can get. 📚

This is true and something bell hooks used to talk about as well.

"When we love children, we acknowledge by our every action that they are not property, that they have rights - that we respect and uphold their rights."

- bell hooks, All About Love
I’m going to keep it real and hope I don’t get accused of overstating the issue; children’s liberation is the key to the future you want. The active, and often dismissed, oppression of children is near the root of what ails us as a nation.

really important to know that Spotify is a loss for 90% of artists.

So when you use Spotify, you are harming... you know... most of the music industry...

Buy the music! From Bandcamp, from the band. Buy their merch. Go to their gigs.
Spotify just reported record-breaking profits.

In totally unrelated news, Spotify stopped paying nearly 90% of artists on the service ANYTHING (no royalties for songs w <1k streams/year)
