Please tell your kids, every damn day if necessary, that chatGPT is not a goddamn search engine and you shouldn’t believe a word it says. Tell the adults too, but it’s especially imperative to inoculate kids against this
Well this is grim

Block 2/64 was a struggle. I think I sewed the order incorrectly, and I definitely underestimated some seams. Overall, I am not thrilled with the product. But I learned:
1) It's okay to unpick (I kept telling myself that an unpicker is just like an eraser).

Block 1/64: my very first quilted block. I was gifted the fabric and covers of The Art of Quilting, and so I have a project to learn with.

It doesn't need to be perfect, or even good, it just needs to exist.

Be hopeful, evil feeds on nihilism.
11) The next few months are going to bring unimaginable pain to so many. I did my breakdown earlier this week because I confronted the fact that I might be separated from my kids like my husband was. Grieve. But remember we are legion. Be uncompromisingly hopeful because fascists feed on nihilism.

4) Learn to live with social complexity. If you write off the possibility of persuading your fellow citizens, fascists win by default. In practice fascist ideologues are few, but people think they can ride that tiger for their own purpose. Read Sarah Ahmed’s organization of hate. Weaponize love.

My current go-to line is 'if you can't out-human a computer, you're going to be in serious trouble once you leave university...' - bleak, but unfortunately true.
Thought-provoking rebuttal, particularly the final words. It's always worth reminding students that they are creative & intelligent, that our job is to help them accentuate that, & that the "hype cycle" around "AI" will rob them of that opportunity (as well as, you know, boiling the oceans)
In response to OpenAI’s recent ‘A Student’s Guide to Writing with ChatGPT’, Arthur Perret (maître de conferénces, Jean Moulin Lyon 3) writes a line-by-line rebuttal — A Student’s Guide to Not Writing with ChatGPT www.arthurperret.fr/blog/2024-11...

Today, I continued an unexpected journey of helping a 7th grader reconcile with maths, the more I teach fundamentals the more connections I see between disciplines.

Today I have rocked my job, I have helped kids master word-attack skills and helped a 7th grader grasp the base 10 number system. She paid me a huge compliment: "You make maths seem simple ma'am". Of course, I reminded her that maths truly is simple if you take it step by step.

Me, telling an anecdote

Man, it was as big as a dinner plate. Well, maybe a side plate. How big are dinner plates? Hang on, I'll check

I utterly despise doomer thinking. We have WORK to do, god damn it.

We have years, DECADES of work to do. It is going to take our time and money and emotional commitment.

Functional political systems are *supposed to be* boring! It should be sewage specialists arguing over what size pipe is most efficient for the city layout! It should be debates over whether to put a mural or a frieze in the new park!

“Interesting politics” are when people start dying!

Bitcoin consumes about 2.5% of US electricity, about the same as all residential cooling. An article decrying *that* electricity usage as a personal moral failing would be much less tone deaf.

Darlings, a moment.

You are *not* hard to love. If someone made you feel that way, that is 100% about THEM and their own bullshit.

Loving people is easy. None of us are perfect. We're all quirky, with flaws and baggage.

But love doesn't give a damn about that minutiae.
