i love how "there's polonium in cigarettes" sounds like a conspiracy but it's been known for years and is basically because radium in the soil and fertilizer that decays into radon, which sticks to sticky tobacco leaves as it decays into polonium-210

Today I showed the designers that you can name cells in spreadsheets and use the names in formulas (i.e. "=PLAYER_LEVEL" instead of "=C12"). You can then use the Name Manager to track or rename them. I thought this was common knowledge, but I guess not, so sharing that tidbit here.

metrics allowing granular measure of engagement made it easy to make cults and now we even have political cults around single substacks

when people can know what to aim for to make you care its really easy to do that at scale until you're basically just indulging their worst instincts for money

If we had responded to Covid by normalizing masking, providing respirators in healthcare & adopting clean air standards…we could have beaten the virus.

We would also be seeing less measles, colds & flu.

We would all be healthier.

I believe history will see it as one of our greatest failures.

A particularly insidious but common pitfall of community moderation is an understandable but wrong insistence on running things via strict adherence to a set of guidelines. This never actually works in practice because you end up with a bunch of bad faith actors constantly testing boundaries.
