I would just like to point out the irony of Arsenal finally signing a clinical 9 and now people are getting behind Gabriel Jesus playing more again

This is really good.

After reading the first paragraph I can't help but wonder if the whole fanbase collectively thought this in silence... Because I did.

The point of good statistics work in sports isn’t to end the conversation, it’s to start the conversation from a better place.
. @themlg.bsky.social has a really nice phrase about how you don't need to just regurgitate the numbers but you do need to account for them, and have a reasonable theory for why your opinion and the data differs. 6-game team-level xG is perfect for that
Feel like any discussion of promoted teams that doesn't talk about this vs league position is missing something. Early numbers are early numbers, but 1) do we think Sunderland will finish closer to 12th or 5th 2) this spread doesn't feel totally unusual for promoted teams, historically

Arsenal have only had Ødegaard for 40+ minutes in one of six Premier League games so far this season.

Newcastle had eight shots yesterday. They've had less in just one Premier League home game since the start of 2022/23, and n that occasion they played an hour with 10 men.

You don’t win a title without winning games like that. We’d already dropped points twice from similarly hard fought games, so this is huge

6 I worry about Gyokeres’s technical level but honestly if all he does is score flat track bully goals against the bottom half teams then that addresses a significant gap for us and so be it.

if the "big summer" was Madueke and Gyökeres why on earth did Arsenal not do anything in January

I look around the league and I think Arsenal look best placed to win the title this year.

and yet I am unconvinced. can’t put my finger on why. too much squad churn maybe; can’t see the breakthrough yet.

One of the major things I’ve learned this summer is that there is a TON of underlying frustration/anger within the fanbase. It seems ready to turn on things at the first sign of adversity.

The kumbaya days of 22/23 are long gone.

Hard to top Jesus 22/23, but a solid chance of Gyökeres hitting a few violent ones that scramble our brains. For any doubts I have, his goals do hit different.

If he completes his signing, Viktor Gyökeres could become the seventh Swedish player to play a Premier League game for Arsenal after Freddie Ljungberg, Stefan Schwarz, Anders Limpar, Rami Shaaban, Kim Källström & Sebastian Larsson.
