When I was at NBC Digital, there was a whole category of story we did that was basically surfacing local news coverage and advancing it.

The entire news ecosystem is built on a pipeline of local and state coverage that increasingly does not exist.
When I was on CNN's northeast desk, the first job at 6a every morning was to read the local papers. That guided some of what the massive CNN machine followed every day.

When those papers die, CNN doesn't hire new regional reporters. What you get instead is more panel shows, more punditry.
"The newspaper industry served as a feeder for our entire news media ecosystem. So when we lose those newspapers, we've lost that journalism. In the early 2000s, we had 40 journalists per 100,000 people. We're now down to 8 journalists per 100,000 people," says @victorpickard.bsky.social.

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and Tiny Tim will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed

And to Tiny Tim who did NOT die, but put on immortality. Then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?...But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ

Moral panics in this culture- secret Satanist abusers, homosexuals, trans people, and so on- are largely an attempt to deal with this without acknowledging and confronting the reality of abuse
America is a culture of child abuse. Ask any survivor - we find one another, we form networks and communities.

The true scale of it would stagger and sicken you, and so it is buried, it is swept under the rug, it is denied and the survivors are silenced by whatever means are necessary.
Government of pedophiles. They're all tainted with this for the rest of their lives.

Misery or Stand By Me
Today would be a great day to have a poll option on bluesky. So we could officially decide what is the best Rob Reiner film of all time. As it is, let’s just go with our favorite. What is ur favorite Rob Reiner film?

Local artsy theater showed Old Boy recently, and I had seen it, but the person in front of me clearly had not so I spent the whole movie watching their reactions
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

I've been reading a lot of newer horror this year, and a theme I've noticed is a lot of stories revolve around being financially forced to move back into a childhood home

Since becoming a parent I have not, in fact, understood the parents who say “if you were a parent you’d understand” about vaccine hesitancy. Being in charge of this fragile little miracle has me saying things like “give her all the vaccines. Turn this baby into a pincushion” to doctors

Spouse is such a good father. He will turn off the TV when he's watching sports if he sees the baby watching them too, because he doesn't want her to get too much screentime. Meanwhile, baby and I started watching the godzilla movies together on like day 2

Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization
