I have a lot of critical thoughts about cozy fantasy and how it's framed (often) as not only inherently anti-capitalist but radically anti-capitalist.

But my primary rejection of that train of thought is that building fiction around comfort fails to actually engage with the hard processes...

I don’t think they’re misreading them so much as they are terrified of the implications because it means the status quo has to break. there’s no incrementalism for this. mass radicalization of this scale scares Democrats more than anything Republicans could do and I mean that literally.

Kind of feel like a lot of politicians, even in Minnesota, are misreading the implications of this moment. I feel like the past three days have been tremendously radicalizing for so many people. I have witnessed it even in my own small communities, it goes beyond just incandescent rage.

I think it's partially about how whiteness, as constructed, is conditional. You support the power, or you simply are not given access to the life-affirming social systems and power of whiteness, and furthermore are treated as, in some ways, as 'non-white'.

We don’t have much social science work on how White Americans judge other White ppl for aligning w/ racial minorities. But perceptions of racial betrayal may help explain hostility toward “coastal elites” & support for state violence against perceived allies. Would love to read if I’ve missed it.

you don't need to add caveats agreeing that the head of state abducted is a bad guy before opposing abduction of a head of state by military force. If the rule was any head of government is fair game then the entire world would be a series of decapitation strikes and show trials in foreign courts.

Carpeting the floor of his enormous gaping maw were rows and rows of teeth in various states of decay like an unkempt graveyard, and from the roof of this thing's mouth were curtains of tongues, sheets of prehensile meat, twisting and intertwining, spit foaming at the corners of flesh. “you are not worthy, not yet.” Jarnstrum wasn't even sure how the man was speaking as there was no throat noticeable. He pushed away the grotesque display for the moment, and focused on the issue on hand. “What must I do, little man?” Jarnstrum said, waiting, looking over this strange little creature again. “What must you do?” he said, and this time, Jarnstrum spotted the mouth that spoke, crusted lips peeking out from the collar for his white robs, a slobbering, gibbering gap where flesh should have been speaking with vindictive cruelty that only now Jarnstrum was picking up. And the mouths did not stop on the neck. Jarnstrum realized with a peaking revulsion that this was a man of many mouths, slits opened on the arms and hands and legs and beyond into a yawning black unknown that rested in the center of the thing that walked like a man. What had he done to himself, Jarnstrum couldn't help but wondered. “What must you do?” he repeated. “You must let go as our king and god let go. You must overcome the pitiful flesh and embrace the indomitable will. In a word, fleshbound, you must transform. Isn't that right, Forlorner? The Will overcomes the weak subsumes.” “The Will...” Jarnstrum said, the word like a memory on his lips, and he turned to the Black Buzzard, who he could see, white-knuckle grip on the golden staff, jaw taunt, had become enraged. “That is the god of your people, is it not shaman?” (alt limit) reads: As the girl got closer, it became clear exactly how much at war the creature was with itself. The steel half-armour was riveted and bolted through blackened, rotting flesh. There was an unmistakable smear of the Stranger, magic infused to the thing itself, leaving it in a continuous state of decomposition. Gears, pulleys, tubes, wires, and chains were interlaced with the flesh replacing tendons, veins, and muscles that had been ripped free in what the girl could only assume was incredibly painful surgeries. She now knew why it couldn't die—it was already dead, basically deathless. But something had to be powering the mark of the Stranger. A series of churning gears that occupied the gut, turned and turned, little cries and whelps of pain as made by a machine, escaped. A bastard's idea of a mouth. It kept saying what it had been saying, and the girl could only wonder what it was sorry for, along with a hundred other questions. She had to wait for the others to catch up. The first party, shining with sweat, jogged in, and the injured monster's mantra slightly changed. But these three weren't who they needed. Gynn and Jiliana took their time, but it was Jiliana's magic and Gynn's medical knowledge that would be most at use here. “The mark is on its person, of that I am sure. It's not remote control as is the case with many who take the Stranger as their patron.” Jiliana said, moving quickly once she was informed of the situation. “Where that mark is, I ain't sure. The aura envelops the whole body.” “Well looking over the body, and not seeing any exotic, well more exotic material, I can only summarize that whatever you're looking for is going to be behind that mask.” Gynn added. The monster for its part, did not care to be poked at and prodded, in it simply stated over and over the same three sounds, first quietly, but growing louder as it went. The girl stood over it, holstered her iron, and fiddled with the mask. They had dreamt of it, the Abyssalnaut, it called to them—its name a secret imposition upon all the builders of the universe, they scream it in anguish as their own failed and crumble, its steel rotten, its bricks dust. These things, empty of life, empty of passion, without the millions of contradictions of the true city, not the disregarded, forgotten dead, not the needle holes in young skin, the grunting machines ripping into the flesh of the city, carrying through them the many souls upon which the city called its own (its name was their name first, subletting their own identity to the true presence of existence, the city sits in the heart of all things, you become it, submit to god and king and lord, submit to them on seats on high, scream its name, we must build it, we must create, no one else will). The incandescent lighthouses on every street corner, the rabid hounds running through the alleyways (they knew the name of the city best, those wretched beasts with no names and obliterated names, forgone when they were abandoned to the roads that became their kingdom, they knew the name best, they knew the secret name, but they guarded it jealously (alt-text limit) Reads: Chet grazed it, and gingerly grasped it, and they stepped inside the world Johanna made. A wilderness of young, raw emotions. Simulations of what Chet could only assume was her life on the Great Lakes. But they moved beyond that, into a land that hummed with colour and music, and the black and whites of the comicscapes becoming less concrete and more abstract, thoughts and meanings only being expressed by shapes. This tunnel gave away to an abandoned wonderland. All around were impossible, but honest examples of any kind art form you could think of. Sculptures that returned to themselves at angles that broke physics. Paintings the size of planets but somehow still comprehensible. A record player, somewhere in the distance, was playing a song that had no sound but transmuted its emotions all the same. Each unique thing, each full of constellations of lesser echos, had its own place like a gallery of dreams. Some of this space however was empty, marked by absence, informed by loss. But still they pushed past the extravagant towards more recognizable, more manageable expressions of imagination, but even here they had an unreal quality. Perfect manifestations of the forms, unblemished by the inherent wear of reality. Ideal types that Chet had admitted to himself lost some of the character that flaws gave all things, but still it was a sight to behold. Eventually they arrived at their apparent destination. It was a graffiti mural, of what kind, Chet couldn't say—he didn't know much about graffiti, but he knew enough that they had developed their language, and passed it along to each other, each new artist being initiated into culture first by an exotic, the sounds familiar, but the meanings a door to elsewhere. It was large, full of neon colours, the letters bold and bulbous, it seemed to say 'BIGTETSUOFB'. “This is Kenyon's.” Johanna said.

Really got to ask, when all things have been fully incorporated into the body politic of capitalism, what will be the point of doing anything.
