You go through Lake Michigan under the Mackinac Bridge into Lake Huron. It is a contiguous body of water, the arbitrary separation of lake names isn't relevant to border crossing, that's like saying you can't sail from Canada to India because the Indian Ocean separates them.

Right, we agree that airports and coastal landmasses are not the same; I think we probably also agree that CBP's claimed jurisdiction is an absurd overreach but haven't quite aligned on how they define it.

Actually yeah CBP does also claim enhanced authority at international ports of entry like DFW but I didn't say you can fly a boat.

"international land borders *and the U.S. coastline*" is the important bit there. You can pilot a ship from Lake Michigan to Canada without touching ground, therefore CPB claims it under their jurisdiction.

The lake doesn't give a shit where you put the invisible line that separates the part called Lake Michigan from the part called Lake Huron, it's all one body of water you can pilot a ship from Canada to the US through. I don't make the policy, take it up with DHS if you want a geography lesson.
