Something missing from most of the coverage is that (a) it's inference (queries) that takes up the bulk of energy costs, not training and that (b) Deepseek was trained on the outputs of another LLM, whose energy costs are somehow universally shrugged off as irrelevant by these people

College freshman today were 6 years old in the 2012 election.

A student of mine (age 20) told me after class that he appreciates when I explain how US politics and media were different before, because the Trump era is all he’s seen.

This is what young Americans think politics is. It’s normal now.
I think that folks aren't seriously thinking about the implications of young adults who know nothing other than a country which has normalized MAGA politics, God help us all.

The Arctic Ocean could see its first ice-free day as early as 2027, with a likely window within 9-20 years after 2023. This won’t bring dramatic change overnight, but it marks a fundamental shift in the Arctic’s natural environment—a stark warning about climate change. #ActOnClimate

To everyone saying, "Can't Biden order background checks, why won't he step up," why don't YOU step up?

5 Senators have expressed an interest in background checks. If they insist on it, that's enough to force the issue--and for longer than just this first round of nominees.
Guardian is reporting that Trump wants to delay FBI background checks until he has taken over the FBI.

But four to five GOP Senators (Collins, Cramer, Murkowski, Rounds, and Ernst) have suggested they want FBI background checks.

The Neo-Nazis that marched down High Street were met with violence from local residents, despite what some smug people on social media would have had you believe.

That’s the quote. I was looking for it. And here it is. Hannah Arendt on the Matt Gaetz as AG announcement
'This process includes the replacement of all first-rate talents, regardless of their political loyalties, with crackpots and fools whose lack of intelligence and creativity is the best guarantee of their loyalty.'
