Here because there's nowhere else to go now. And you know what? I'm rather enjoying it. See pinned post regarding what makes me tick and if you're going to follow me, POST SOMETHING!

Je ne suis pas Charlie.
Pinned
In arbitrary order; beer, cats, philatelic history, broadcasting history, buses, architecture, the Peak District, the Yorkshire coast, cooking, jazz, classical, prog, football, cricket, Tom Lehrer, Flanders & Swann, not doing small talk, fighting against the grim meathook future on multiple fronts.
okay, time for a prompt post to distract us all from the horrors. quote this post with your areas of expertise, interest, hyperfixation and/or obsession and invite your audience to ask you questions about them.

Here is my Bond idea: I'm imagining a Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead treatment, where the Bond movie is background to two hapless MI5 newbies.

I'm not sure if others have noticed this, but interesting that one of the Prescott criticisms of the BBC is based on those of the 'History Reclaimed' group, which is also associated with the 'Restore Trust' group's attacks on & so far unsuccessful attempts to take control of the National Trust. 1/3

Hello @support.bsky.team

I heard from Sarah Kendzior @sarahkendzior.bsky.social that her account was suspended.

Can you please look into this and reinstate her account? She’s a published author and scholar on authoritarianism. Her presence here is valuable.

Honestly, Conan-Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes and all it took to bring him back was a single vague and implausible paragraph that we all accepted because we wanted to read more silly little stories. I think James Bond will be fine.

Almog Cohen, deputy minister in the Prime Minister office, stormed today a computer science class in Ben Gurion University with his fascist supporters, to prevent the lecturer Sebastian ben Daniel from giving a class.
Ben Daniel is an outspoken critic of the occupation and apartheid.

Look, I don’t think we as a society really need any more James Bond, but James Bond was always supposed to be a fucking cipher. We aren’t supposed to know shit about him and his continuity between movies used to be barely extant.

If I had a national institution I wanted to undermine, Hanover Communications are who I’d go to.

They’ve been undermining the NHS for years, successfully lobbying for firms to get NHS ££, including US giant United Health, & providing staff to pro-private politicians.

It’s just what they do.
1/ Michael Prescott of Hanover Communications, whose leaked memo alleging left-wing bias led to the BBC meltdown.

You could be forgiven for thinking that a corporate lobbyist & former Murdoch press hack may not have the best interests of public-service broadcasting at heart.

As I’ve seen this confused a few times, please note that Robin Gibb was a much-beloved member of the Bee Gees, whilst Robbie Gibb is the BBC board member who also, totally coincidentally, was editorial adviser in the set-up of GB News.

I know, Bee Gees, GBeebies, a bit confusing…

This thread is a great primer on how to translate dogwhistles into something you can actually see.
Fascinating to break this down and understand what stage of brainworms the Spectatorati are at now.

Indo-European linguistic connections like this are so cool. So too, "pur" or "puri" (British spelling, "pore") in many place names in India, e.g., Jodhpur, Jaipur, Kanpur.

Another example: "knowledge." Greek "γνώ" as in gnosis, Sanskrit "ज्ञा" as in jnana, and English "kno" as in know/ledge.

Charli’s team-up with the Music For A New Society hitmaker will surely cement her megastar status
John Cale has made a record with someone who wasn't even born when he made Songs For Drella, which for most artists would count as a late-career recording, but for him... long may he roll, is what I'm saying.
