I've got a new story out today in National Geographic about "disaster microbiology," an emerging field that brings together all sorts of different experts to track the unexpected, deadly outbreaks that follow natural disasters that shake up the invisible microbial communities around us.
The disease detectives who solve the world’s strangest outbreaks
When weird fungal epidemics crop up in far-flung places, scientists work together to unravel how the microscopic murderers show up and turn deadly.

For my part, I would say that questioning the framing of some Times stories—for example, the highlighting of Trump’s putative emotions or the foregrounding of what he says (even when, as is often the case, what he says is false)—is not an indication that I want my “views validated.”

President Trump is pardoning a convicted Honduran drug lord who openly boasted that he would "stuff the drugs right up the noses of the gringos," and push drugs into America.

This is the most pro-crime, pro-corruption administration in our country's history.

For context: Jack served as head of the Office of Legal Counsel during the Bush administration. He’s widely regarded—especially in conservative legal circles—as a leading authority on executive power. The fact that he’s expressing this view in such stark terms is significant.
Harvard Law School’s Jack Goldsmith:

“In short, if the Post’s facts are correct, it appears that Special Operations Forces committed murder when the ‘two men were blown apart in the water, as the Post put it.’”

Always ask yourself if the scenario you’re imagining makes any sense.

Why would a small drug smuggling boat have lots of extra people on board? Bear in mind that each smuggling trip is risky as hell. Is that what you would do if you had to plan that trip?
