Right now there are American Samoans who moved to Alaska, cast votes in a local election, and may end up in jail bc they're not allowed to do that. alaskabeacon.com/2026/01/14/a...
Americans by name, prosecuted for voting in Alaska | Alaska Beacon
American Samoans are classified simply as “U.S. nationals” — a sort of limbo state that acknowledges they are American by birth, but denies them the full rights and privileges of citizenship.

A much-discussed topic on here is how many pundits only assign agency to Democrats. (Not Ned, other people.)

Clear R role in MN cop-tracking/mocking. Seems very clear to me that the mass pardon of J6ers made it hard for Rs to credibly finger-wag about Disrespecting Law Enforcement.
Folks, Trump has brought the full force of ICE to bear on a mid-sized city and he can't even stop the demonstrations there. He's not going to be able to cancel the midterm elections by fiat or station his goons outside more than a handful of polling places.

Today at 34 & Park in Minneapolis, a woman tried to drive down the street where a protest had broken out in front of a home ICE was raiding, saying she had a doctor apt to get to. ICE agents busted out her windows, cut off her seatbelt, and pulled her out before arresting her.

Most dystopian stuff I saw last week (always a competition) - Renee Good haters sharing a fake rap sheet that listed her age as 35 and her birth year as 1980.

It was the low quality that got me; audience so ready to believe "she deserved it," doesn't care if the math on the hoax doc is right.

Rep. @AOC: I understand that Vance believes shooting a young mother of three in the face three times is an acceptable America that he wants to live in, and I do not. That is a fundamental difference between Vance and I. I do not believe that the American people should be assassinated in the street.

The evidence is increasingly pointing to the probability that an ICE agent killed a woman after misreading her as a threat because he was distracted by his simultaneous effort to record her so he could upload her image to a facial recognition database.
We've analysed this video of the shooting of Renee Nicole Good yesterday in Minneapolis frame-by-frame to highlight the positioning of the gun and phone in the ICE agent's hands.

one takeaway from the grok noncon porn thing is that much of the media just isn't interested in an issue they can't pretend has two sides or that doesn't give them an opportunity to shit on the left. Also it would be uncomfortable to justify remaining on twitter after acknowledging it

I majored in Gender Studies at a small liberal arts college fifteen years ago, and I am shocked DAILY at how useful it is for understanding the world. And it has only gotten more useful over time. My law degree is technically useful, but my gender studies degree is practically useful.
kind of darkly funny that "gender studies" is the stereotypical "useless degree" because gender studies will help you understand a large and important chunk of the current psychosis in american life

People in the comments really need to learn that coming up with an extremely specific scenario where an idea doesn’t work is not the same as proving an idea is worse than the status quo. Limiting car speed would almost indisputably result in fewer deaths, even if there are exceptions
My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist
the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.
