I'm another recent arrival from the other place, where I browsed, but hadn't posted in years. Never got the hang of the "social" in social media.

My banner refers to a notable comment in an early version of Unix. Yes, I'm one of those old-timers who mourned dmr more than Jobs.
'You are Not Expected to Understand This': Unix's Most Notorious Code Comment
The phrase “You are Not Expected to Understand This” is probably the most famous comment in the history of Unix.

The White Christian Supremacism of this administration is so extreme that it seems like it’s got to resolve with either a massive rejection of such illiberalism, or a violent, authoritarian imposition of it.

I think it’s time to put this one back out into the ether, friends

Come and learn about how the tropes undergirding anti-Jewish hatred and conspiracy theories as they exist today came to be…
The Antisemitism Post (tm)
Gotta get the history to know where the tropes live in the discourse today.

A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.

My mistake has been trying to explain what "fascism" is to people who don't care what it is.

So I'm going to try something else. Let's do this as a practical thought exercise.

If America *were* fascist *today* - what would you have to do differently in your daily life? /1

There is absolutely nothing old or consolidated about *multiracial, pluralistic democracy* in America. It only started 60 years ago.

And the conflict over whether or not it should be allowed to endure and prosper has been the central fault line in U.S. politics ever since.

Hey, so as a veteran and incident responder I need to warn you to pay attention to something in America.

The human brain is resilient. While you're watching kids get dragged away from the parents and people being beaten in the streets, you're accumulating trauma but also being desensitized.

I for one think the Epstein Ballroom will be magnificent. I love the decor theme of “what if Uday Hussein ran a Ramada Inn.” And giving it a theme song everyone will associate with it is a stroke of brilliance! “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” is very catchy.

I have in fact fallen into the trap of these things. It speaks the language of authority that normal authority normally has. I just don't know why you do not learn how fucking dangerous that is very quickly.

We're not built for this stuff. Especially children. Like what are we doing here.

Polls aside, I’m curious about the opinion of those on the ground in NC on what the “vibes” and feel of the citizenry there. Are you sensing Trump is losing *any support* from Republicans there based on the economy and antics from ICE?

a key thing about vought — and all of these guys — is that they have a totally top down and hierarchical vision of the world. they believe that the cultural changes they hate can be turned off by destroying the federal government because they can’t imagine that they emerged bottom-up in society
What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.
