The media allowing Trump plausible deniability on Project 2025 during the campaign is right up there with Iraq War stenography in craven, lazy disgracefulness
hey so this is insane

We should increase the USAID budget to triple what it would be absent the trump cuts

It’s not just that they normalize political violence. They also accuse the left of engaging in mostly imaginary violence, which gives unhinged right-wingers justification to “retaliate.”

Real world:
- Trump team trying to create a Reichstag moment.
- Trump telling military audience that LA is hellhole full of "animals"
- Officials in Calif trying both to calm things down, and stand up

PUNDIT world:
- Is it smart politics?
- Is Gavin running?
- Doesn't Trump look strong!

I know it’s wildly out of touch with current opinion, but I legitimately think republicans are headed for an electoral thrashing. Probably more so in the house and in 2028 unless rural economies absolutely collapse.

One can say a lot of nice things about Bernie, but none of them account for him coming fairly close to beating Hillary for the nomination. Most of that was her own flaws and especially decades of propaganda demonizing her, leading to her narrow loss in the fall.

I was very lonely in warning about her candidacy at the time
A far closer thing - also not a smoke-filled room, but much less defensible in retrospect - was how every mainstream Dem convinced themselves in 2015-6 that Hillary Clinton would inevitably win the nomination and the White House, such that Bernie Sanders was the only non-Hillary in the primaries.

If you sat down a random panel of Americans and told them what Republicans are currently doing, my guess is that the vast majority simply wouldn't believe you. It comes off like you're describing a Bond villain. The reality sounds wildly different & more extreme than what they hear organically.

One challenge I might get is -

"You defend US Dems from left attacks, but also criticise the UK Labour Party from the left, why?"

The short answer is because they're different: Dems are now well to the left of Labour, on both social & economic issues
You have a right to a family life, which includes being able to settle a foreign spouse or children, not have them live in limbo for a decade

Frankly, rural America started badly overspending their credit as soon as it got consumed by the Fox Redneck Culture Complex and forgot -- broadly speaking -- the American maxim that people can do what they like long as it don't bother the horses

"they also don't care about your way of life" is a total lie. they're obsessed with your way of life! they vote and speak in loathing of your way of life! small-town red America obsessively focuses on other ways of life
This from @jdcivicscience.bsky.social nails why small town, red America is not turning on Trump.

Imagine POTUS nodding yes while a self described dictator from a country smaller than Washington state refuses to return to USA a man sent to his country in error. Even tho USA taxpayers are paying the bill for this prisoner. The big story is about the wanna be dictator not the self described one.

What the American people want on immigration is simple: a vast armed sweep of the country kicking out the illegals with no exceptions, except they don’t want to see it too much on the news, it can’t make them sad, impact anyone like them, or hurt anyone sympathetic.
👀🚨JICYMI: New Quinnipiac Poll: More Americans now disapprove of Trump on immigration by 50% to 45% (including 51% independents)

MAJORITY of Americans now disapprove of Trump on deportations by 53% to 42% poll.qu.edu/poll-release...

They’d lose
If Democratic congressional leadership don’t lead an en masse halt to all legislative business after today, I don’t know why they’re worth supporting. What moment could more demand a response of intractable and tedious opposition? Shut it all down, and refuse to budge.

Last July, Project 2025's Kevin Roberts said “the second American Revolution ... will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.”
It was a declaration of war against the American people, a demand for our surrender. Some cowards in law, academia and business have submitted. Many of us never will.

"The left went too far" in contemporary U.S. politics is almost always a lie and a very convenient way to rationalize moral failure. For example, "MeToo went too far" replaces "I do not care about sexual violence or its victims and I don't want to have to even feel bad about that"

I mean on the other hand this policies will cause a recession and the entire party, not just Trump, have lashed themselves around it, which was the missing piece in 2008 and 2020
Really great that we appear to be sliding into the sweet spot of inflicting crippling long-term damage on US institutions and influence while keeping the consequences diffuse enough to not break the Republican Party.

the thing about a really nasty trade war is that what is being attrited is each country’s ability to make its losers swallow pain.

I don’t think America has any appetite for it at all, not over this

I’ve been saying this for 7 years
1) Fox News is for real not showing stock-market ticker during this week's collapse.

2) Its economic news is "strong jobs report."

3) Every time I've checked in today, the coverage has been "illegal immigrants committing new crimes."

This is state propaganda, on a par with North Korea or PRC.

I'm watching CNBC. These anchors are so angry. They really didn't believe he'd do it. They're actually just now, 10 years into this shit, realizing he's a maniac hellbent on revenge and there's no grand plan for the markets. Better late than never but holy shit.
