Hey all, popping in here to say I used to work at unemployment and have filed myself, and as such I know a lot about unemployment. If someone were to be impacted by a grant being cut off and had questions, I’d have lots to tell that hypothetical person.

Do with that what you will.
Oh so as soon as I get big boobs they’re not cool anymore? Typical.
some devastating news

I have a parent who will respond to any observation that a law is bad, or unjust with “well that’s the law.” They always say it like it proves a point, but it proves nothing. We did not get rules about cow farming and road construction from the fucking soil.
a lot of rotten shit in the world, worst thing you can do is look at laws and pronouncements and see destined. nothing is ever destined.

Fun fact, the NYT op-ed section was very litterally conceived as an outlet for “responsible conservative opinions” to attract readers from the Herald Tribune after it folded. It has always been a stage for the powerful to say what they want without the scrutiny journalists face.
Paul Krugman confirming what has been increasingly obvious to readers for years: New York Times editors are becoming increasingly indifferent to facts and obsessed with mollycoddling the right.

What is wild is when the history books tell the tale of Trumps rise, Bob will be an example of the corrupt establishment that drove the populists to power, and none will mention this bit.
Incredible how every pol accused or convicted of corruption is now trotting out this line.
Some stunning remarks from Menendez outside court: “President Trump was right. This process is political, and it’s corrupted to the core. I hope President Trump cleans up the cesspool and restores the integrity to the system.”

John Fetterman co-sponsoring the “put immigrants in camps” bill a week before Trump announced he wants a shiny new camp.
Guantanamo has always been a stain on this country but today my ire is for every democrat that has treated right wing immigration rhetoric as a legitimate concern
Trump announces an executive order authorizing a 30,000 capacity migrant detention center in Guantanamo.

"Some of them are so bad we don't even trust the countries to hold them because we don't want them coming back, so we're going to send them out to Guatanamo Bay."

Concentration camps preceded extermination camps by several years. They began in Germany just as administratively, just as innocuously, as this.

It's important to understand the historical track we are on.
Trump: Today I'm also signing an executive order to instruct the departments of defense and homeland security to begin preparing the 30,000 person migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay

I agree this is annoying, but I wouldn't call these people radicalized. A lot are just activated liberals. And that's fine, if the goal is "anything but fascism" liberals who aren't full on fascist sympathizers are allies, ultimately. They will also just be a bit annoying.
Love when someone who basically radicalized yesterday bursts in to scold "We should be working to ATTRACT right-wingers rather than alienate them!"

Oh what a smart, original idea the veteran leftists around you never considered before. Thanks. Thank you. You dumb little fuckin baby.

That’s just a concentration camp.

Younger generations aren’t gayer, they are just less afraid.
right-wing attacks aren't just about causing harm, but closing down possibility spaces -- extinguishing ways of thinking that don't conform to a myopic right-wing lens. treating trans people with decency opens the door to a more compassionate, imaginative society. the right wants to suffocate that
i kinda get annoyed when i see the “why are they tearing down trans people, there’s SO FEW of them!!” argument because, like, a *lot* more of you are trans than you realize

You know how employers will pull someone’s legal record or even their fucking credit score to prove they are a bad and compromises person and deny them work?

Liberals will always reveal their more conservative and prudish sides when it suits them politically. Cops are angles, drug addicts are criminals, it all comes out the moment a conservative is the target. RFK jr is a quack, if you can’t make fun of that I’ll assume you’re a quack too.
people keep sneering that rfk jr is a former heroin addict as if that isn’t easily the most human thing about him lol
January 29, 2025 at 8:01 PM
It would be. But having a prior substance use disorder? Nah.
January 29, 2025 at 7:52 PM
Liberals will be out here talking about compassion and then laugh at a man because a struggle with addiction left him with a scratchy voice. We don’t make fun of addicts or people in recovery any more than we make fun of a disabled person.

Hakeem by faxing my conservative Senator I did more than you and you are speaker of the house.
Round one goes to Team America.

We remain in the ring until far right extremism has been completely and totally knocked out.

ChatGPT is not an assistive device for writing.

For one, it’s bad at it. The trash chute will get you to the first floor, that doesn’t make it a replacement for stairs cause you’ll break your legs.

For another, writing is the medium of articulating a human thought. A computer cannot do that.
I love that AI is now being slotted into the "some people can't" disability space. it's the apotheosis of that kind of brainless counterfactual, where a theoretical disability makes behavior acceptable, but the thing they're doing also doesn't even work.

The government really said “lol jk uwu”
🚨 BREAKING: OMB has just issued a memo *rescinding* the previous memo freezing all federal financial assistance programs.

I get where Andrew is coming from, but this IS one of those cases where the best thing we can do is ignore Musk/Trump. They are trying to get credit for spontaneously solving a problem when the plan to bring these astronauts home in February was already in the works.
What in the hell is this

Their return capsule is at the ISS, bringing it home now would just completely f$ck NASA's entire schedule for the ISS. Butch and Sunni are professional astronauts, doing there job and are not stranded in any sense of the word. ffs

This is an oversimplification in a way that I think matters. Civil servants are just people. The swore no oath. They hold no responsibility to save us. And they have less power than you think.
The first place that needs to buckle is the federal workforce and if they're not budging, that should inspire EVERYONE ELSE not to either.

Hold the line. "We the people" has to mean something in the face of powers that seek to strip many of us of our humanity.

I get where Matthew is coming from but I don’t think people are out of line to jump to conclusions.

I feel pretty confident Trump would issue an EO ending SNAP if he could. And he appears to be trying to do that with a lot of things and then retreating slightly when people get too mad.

While we are here, I shouldn't have to explain that "follow the rules" is accepting the admins framing. When your employer changes the expectations of a job (like moving you to a new worksite) that is burdensome in a way that we usually try to protect federal employees from.
2/A thousand sources are sending this to me while flipping out. Read it. It’s basically telling people to resign if they don’t want to follow the rules like returning to the office. There’s no buyout mentioned. www.opm.gov/fork

Respectfully, this doesn't really beat the "buyout" allegations. Trump doesn't want to fill these positions, and doesn't want the work of government being done. But he can't unilaterally fire folks. This workaround is effectively a buyout.
4/A person can resign effective Sept. 30 or earlier if they want. They’ll be paid till their resignation is effective. But they still have to work. I suppose they might be given little to do. But that’s not the same as being given money beyond the salary you get while still on payroll. The key bit:
