Senate Reopens Government After Shutdown

3m

The U.S. Senate on Monday passed a spending bill to reopen the federal government after a 41-day shutdown, with eight Democrats defecting and critics saying it omits ACA subsidy relief.

Democrats were overwhelmingly united on their shutdown demands.

Americans understood that Trump and Republicans were to blame.

Voters made it known last Tuesday that they'll elect leaders who stand up to Trump.

Democrats held the cards — and folded for no reason.

Many Americans are hurting right now because of the shutdown, but caving to Republicans won’t end the hurt.

Trump and his lapdogs continue to assert that they alone have the power to slash whatever programs they don’t like.

Deals with this regime are meaningless.

I’m not a conspiracy person but it is an odd combination of Democratic Senators caving: mainly people retiring or not up for re-election until 2028. Moreover, Democratic leadership seems to accept them breaking rank without any consequences or even serious critique… 🙄

Centrist Democrats in the Senate folded on the shutdown, throwing away their leverage in exchange for worthless GOP promises.

The vote, on Day 41 of the shutdown, signaled an end in sight to weeks of gridlock. Eight members of the Democratic Caucus supplied the critical backing.

I'm not sure why there would be another shutdown at end of January. Some Dems have learned they are unlikely to get anything out of it & others have learned that their members will cave in the end (which means the same outcome).

It looks like strategy but I doubt with a successful follow-up.

This is so easy to claim as a win for the Republicans and to frame it as a “Democratic shutdown”.

Amazing how they fumbled this one… less than a week after getting the clearest of signals that Trump & GOP are wildly unpopular.
