I think the first point is: the good times are over and in the west that is partly because we fell asleep at the wheel. We thought the democratic norms would be passed from generation like a baton. They haven't been, we don't have a type of thinking, active rather than passive, culture or cultivation to have maintained them; we had, but we lost it.

We are going fast towards hard-right authoritarianism; the USA is already there and a yet-undetermined proportion of the west is following.

My Spanish family grew up in right-wing authoritarian times. It was like this: no political involvement of any sort unless it's pro-regime; it was a good idea in much of the country to be religious and attend services; you roughly did what authority told you unquestioningly and you just hoped upon hope that you would never be in a position where you crossed the unforgiving parts of the regime. Reading material was stringently restricted.

Liberties such as sexual freedom and freedom of speech were simply not done unless you were rich or wealth-off. Travelling abroad was for the well-off; you were eternally grateful for tender mercies. There was little or no social security. People were regularly executed. Racism and appalling sexism were not only rife, it was the way to do things. And national service for all males. You kept your head down in a way none of us can now imagine. You rarely saw money in your pockets apart from a little for the mere basics.

Fancy all or some of that ? If so, keep voting for MAGA, Reform and their offshoots. They'll assure you it won't be like any of that, but just wait and see.

We have something beautiful in the west but we are yawning at it and simply want an undetermined Something Else. We are going to get SE and there will be NO way back. A pop-up shiny socio-economic menu with nice choices will not be there, ever.
