JK Galbraith had a phrase, "Private affluence and public squalor" to describe this.
The country that does this (most of them to some degree) has become captive to private interests.

Trump’s big economic ‘vision’ has always been less about affordability & more about affluence — for him & his donors. Billionaires got tax breaks so massive they could probably buy small countries. Regular Americans got ‘trickle down,’ which, as always, turned out to be an economic golden shower.⬇️

Gaining skills when you're too ADHD to teach yourself, too anxious to enroll in school, too friendless to collaborate, and too depressed to believe in yourself, requires a level of ceaseless tutelage which only affluence can access.
I am poor.
I will not take my own life.
But I consider it a lot.

Interesting how illiteracy, infant and maternal mortality, anti-union, anti-science, and pro-theocracy politics don’t add up to affluence.

Consumerism is one of the driving factors in our civilization's decline...I have long believed so. Even with a struggling underclass, we're still afflicted by "the curse of affluence".

Yes. There is a great deal more affluence when it comes to durable big-ticket goods, because electronics are much cheaper, but clothing is quite likely a wash, food is pricier now, and housing, medical, education, and care are all much more expensive.

Another minor thing but a good example. In Leave it to Beaver which was supposed to be a model of 1950s idealized affluence, Wally and the Beave had to share a room. Kids having their own room by default was a very recent thing.

Does this Western HoCo (Glenelg) n-hood of single family McMansions on one acre lots outside the PFA growth boundary look like Smart Growth to you? Or does it look like (mis)use of land use regulation to create a sprawling zone of affluence conveniently located midway between DC & Baltimore?

The penalty of affluence is that it cuts one off from the common lot, common experience, and common fellowship.

The "owners" part is also an affluence thing. It is easier to own the typical 70s home today than it was back then. It's just that Americans are buying larger homes.
