#Laborer
Exactly. The full weight of the White House propaganda and legal apparatus bearing down on one day laborer and his family for months simply because the addled despot can never be wrong.
It’s really atrocious how they threw the full force of the federal government at this one guy because he embarrassed them by being innocent of everything except trying to live his life.

Only one of many, unfortunately. But he got publicity so he had to be destroyed.
Remarkable how brutal the ruling against Trump on Abrego Garcia truly is: It details flagrant and malicious abuses of power all throughout. Trump and Stephen Miller were testing their ability to spread lawless state terror. But the court held the line. 1/

As a lifelong day laborer. This image is beyond offensive.

Once again reminding everyone that generative AI's true purpose and why CEO's around the world are pushing its use is to take the laborer out of labor. "Developing concept art" with AI eventually just leads into replacing the job of concept artist with someone you don't have to pay for it.

Willian Giménez González, Chicago day laborer and beloved worker leader in Chicago, is now free from ICE custody. I spoke to him about his ordeal, and what solidarity looks like in this moment. "They should do more to stop this so we can stop living this nightmare," he said.

i'm not some kind of (scoff) skilled laborer doing a task i'm good at
there's just an undefinable Secret Thing that makes it good when i do it, and that Secret Thing always happens to be missing in things i don't like

I find the seemingly standard public education/reenactor phrase, "every Roman soldier was a [combat] engineer" more than a bit frustrating.

Every Roman soldier could be a *laborer.* The legions also had much higher status specialist engineers, the praefectus fabrum or architectus.

Different jobs!

time for your annual reminder that this is bullshit. you can scroll up in the thread I'm quoting for some numbers, but AFAICT his calculation amounts to "Cratchit made more than an unskilled laborer did in his day."

Doesn't mean min-wage workers today are equally destitute.

So the Roman soldier with this absolutely ubiquitous dolabra (an entrenching tool similar to a pickaxe) is special, not because he is a combat engineer, but because the organization and discipline of the legion, combined with Roman social expectations, make him an effective construction laborer.

If you're only paying $180,000 for all this you're dramatically underpaying the 140 people you're hiring—many of whom appear to be sex workers. The pear trees alone are gonna run you $1,500; the animals another $100,000. I guess mayyyybe if you're hiring each laborer for just one hour?
We agree that the gifts are given cumulatively, right? Such that the speaker gets a new partridge twelve days in a row? If so, the math quickly snowballs into financial ruin.

That's 364 gifts in total, netting out to about $180,000.

The fact that every Roman soldier can be a laborer seems like a small thing but it is, I'd argue, actually quite significant: a lot of armies have troops that for either reasons social status (Sir-Better-Than-You is not digging a trench) or organization aren't really useful for construction work.

I have a laborer at work who frequently wears an “alpha” t shirt. He’s 4’10”. Sure bud, sure.

Gualberto Olac's speech today at a press conference at City Hall was beautiful and I want to pull some longer quotes. He was calling for the city to support safe hiring sites for day laborers. "As a day laborer, I have experienced discrimination from people, from the police, and from employers."
December 8, 2025 at 6:57 PM
It's not just being an experienced laborer, it's being part of an team that's experienced *at that particular task*.
December 7, 2025 at 8:41 PM
we’ve been so outsourced, the outsourcing has gone to the cheapest international laborer.

Places like Canada the European Union protect citizens and workers . Not in America it started to change after Nixon and then Reagan, It really kicked into gear with neolibdemocrats pretending tobe Democrats
