Canada faced this before.

Newfoundland and Laborador declared bankruptacy, and wanted Canada to annex them in 1895.

Cool Canadian Customs history fact:

In 1949, when NL joined 🇨🇦, Canadian liquor import restriction was 70 proof. But in NL, 100 proof.

Neither restriction was written in law.

Negotiating terms of union led to NL newly restricting gin, whisky, etc.

BUT 100 proof rum was still to be allowed in NL!

If you ever happen to be in Harbour Breton, NL. I strongly recommend hiking the « Dead Man’s Cove Trail. » It’s an 8 km / 3 hr loop hike. The beach is awesome!

#indigenous and victims of colonial era prison deportations were set against each other in #Australia and never encouraged to intermarry as they were in #NewFrance.

Sadly a classic settler replacement process began in 1788 with some areas like #Tasmania wholly genocided. Similar to #Newfoundland.
"Invasion Day, also known as Survival Day, is observed on January 26 in Australia, marking the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788."
the Indigenous Peoples of Australia have never recovered from the event. the arrivals were special in that they were settler colonials in tradition of colonialism...

9:05am radar showing snow just to the southeast of the Avalon as a potent low misses Newfoundland offshore.

The Avalon should see some periods of light snow this afternoon and evening, with 2-5cm or so.

Friday. Better than Thursday. Though Thursday set a low bar.

I loved the pup getting her toys out of her toy box, one at a time. The concentration. The problem-solving. The determination to get The One.

And another Bangor near the Atlantic coast. Why not go the whole hog and resurrect the Atlantic Railway - carry on to Belmullet.

In fact - why not carry on to Newfoundland. Using new structures enabled by graphene and maglev trains.

How timely. I have been writing @govnb.bsky.social about this method since early summer of 2025. Newfoundland saw huge success with a central intake model. Hopefully we see similar results here.
