I knew a couple of libertarian hard SF types back in the day and they told me Niven was the archetypal born-on-home-plate-thinks-he-hit-a-home-run privileged millioniare spawn. Once you know to look for it it's everywhere in his books. Very frustrating.

Niven's awfulness is really off the charts. I mean, Heinlein's views were abhorrent but you got the sense he was a pretty good neighbor; Niven as a neighbor would be a nightmare. It spoiled those books for me, kinda like Orson Scott Card's hideous religiosity ruined all his stuff.

Which always cracks me up, because my favorite of the bishops I’ve known in my diocese had quite a bit in common with Niven, especially the mustache.
