Oftwat seems to have a problem.

Rename them to OfTwat
Ofwat letting England water firms charge twice to tackle sewage, court to hear

Companies billed people for sewage disposal, used cash to pay dividends and exec bonuses, dumped sewage in rivers.

Now charging again to fund promised investment, not raising capital from shareholders. Customers fleeced

OfTwat at it again.

It will never be enough and if we want change, we must look to those that also want change, not just those that pretend they do.

The regulator Ofwat has ruled that 5 private water companies can raise bills by even more than previously agreed

A reminder that despite promising to nationalise the water industry Starmer dumped that pledge &decided to side with the private companies instead. This is the result

Misread this as “oftwat’

When I see Ofwat, I read it as Oftwat and I think therein lies the problem.

Apropos of nothing, when I worked in regulation (Ofcom) I recall a colleague leaving to join Ofwat or 'OFTWAT' as he wrote in his all user message. Kind of apt, no?
🤯New 'regulatory forbearance' could allow water companies to dodge fines.
This water regulation is transparently created in the interest of private profit. Water companies' stock market value has increased since the report's release.
Public ownership now!

Breaking news, OFWAT renamed OFTWAT. 💩🌊🌴🦆🦢🐟🦀
Yay.
July 21, 2025 at 10:03 AM
Useless OFWAT to be replaced by a new OFWAT (OFTWAT). "Moving forward" as we now say apparently, we don't need to worry about the drinking water, the 💩 on beaches/sea, cancelled swimming events, seaside holidays, dead fish, stinking rivers with raw sewage, tomatoes growing on beaches...
Phew.

If we're going to replace Ofwat with a new regulator, then perhaps Ofwat could refocus its mission. Call it Oftwat (hey, it just needs adding one letter to the logo) and have it preside over things like placing guillotines on Tube platforms to deal with people not using headphones.
With lots of talk about the future of Ofwat, the economic regulator for the water and sewage sectors in England and Wales, why not check out our explainer on what Ofwat does, how it is structured and the problems it is grappling with www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainer/of...
