Crayfish takeout for breakfast. One of our local Yellow-crowned Night Heron: this bird doesn't yet have the namesake yellow crown because he's still a juvenile. No baby ducks were hurt while I was watching.🪶
Bird with big thick bill and an unfortunate crayfish firmly being held between the top & bottom mandible. The subject has a darkish gray head & neck with light gray streaks. The back and wings of the bird are brown with spots and speckles. It's standing on some rocks at the edge of a body of water, and it has somewhat sinister looking orange eyes.

I collected some images today to reference and my partner had sent me one I really liked. Decided to add his sona into the background of the piece since he chose it. Liminal spaces, dreamscapes & night time is my favorite thing to depict I think. It keeps me ALIVE!!

I haven't drawn anything in months because Aberdeen has been particularly exhausting lately, so tonight I made a point to get back to drawing, starting with Potamotrygon leopoldi, a striking freshwater ray!

We rehomed our barn dog's 3 puppies last week with the stipulation that if it didn't work out, the new owners were to bring them back here and not to a shelter. Well this little one was a bit too much for her new family so now she's part of ours. Welcome aboard, Speck

A mountain lion/cougar sitting on a grassy cliff's edge somewhere. They are a light desaturated brown with white/cream markings, including a heart shape at their chest, speckles on the nose and darker brown around their nose bridge and ears. There is a hole in their ear. Nearby a young bobcat stands in a tree, a light orange-brown with darker brown cub spots shaped like hearts, including a lighter heart shape at their chest. Optional bio(s): Dilacerate ("to tear apart or in pieces", particularly with teeth) the cougar has survived many seasons in the North American wilderness, necessitating slowing down in her old age, when suddenly a silly bobcat orphan appears and decides this is their new parent. Hijinks/begrudging found family on the cranky solitary cats' end ensues. Bobcat could be named Dewdrop. I do not know a lot of information re: premature birth in species with litters, this site gives some information on domestic cats but its more so focused on the mother cat's health outcomes and causes. https://www.petmd.com/cat/conditions/reproductive/c_ct_premature_labor Likely the bobcat was close to the borderline.

(There was a terrified sparrow uproar and a *thunk*)

My initial thought was sharp-shinned hawk, but it never showed its front, and those cheek streaks say merlin to me.

A view of the back and fanned tail and wings of this small raptor, somewhere in size between a robin and magpie. It has a curved fanned tail with black and white stripe bands, a dark grey back, and the dark and white stripe/spotted wings I associate with hawks. It is stuck on my balcony in the snow under the BBQ, trying to get out through the glass. A side view, wings are closed, tail still fanned, wing shoulders raised to project a broad grey back (it didn't like me watching). Its head and face are brown with white streaks. Top of head and nape are brown, there are brown streaks extending down off the sides of the beak like classic falcon faces, between streaky white cheeks and a white chin. A little bit of a white eyebrow. The raptor trying another route out, climbing the snow and piled yogurt tub planters in the corner of the glass balcony (the spruce tree is very visible beyond the glass, much to the bird's frustration). The yogurt tubs are 12cm (4.5 inches) tall. The bird's body is maybe as tall or slightly shorter than one tub. Wings are open, dark with speckles beyond the grey expanse of back and shoulders. A very frustrated raptor, perched again on the packed snow under the bbq on my balcony. Its head and nape are brown, tiny white eyebrow/supercilium, streaky white leading into brown cheeks, a brown streak down from the mouth corner like a classic falcon, white chin and hints that the breast is streaky brown-white but impossible to see beyond those frustrated grey shoulders. Tail fanned and slightly curvy. The radiating white spots amidst dark bands are very visible in the one partially-opened wing.

The Spotted Pardalote's name is actually "spotted" twice. The word "pardalote" comes from ancient Greek pardalōtos, meaning "spotted like a leopard," and its scientific name Pardalotus punctatus also means "spotted".

#speckles&spots for #birdoftheday made me think of this Barn Owl. I kept seeing a Canyon Wren dive thru a crack in the rock shelf above a cliff, from below it was apparent the crack was huge! A little exploration and…OMG! Had time for a couple shots before it was gone. Northern Nevada
Tucked into a deep rock cleft an owl stands on a ledge, head leaning out to see what was making all the noise. Eyes staring into the camera, white facial disc, brilliant white breast with speckles of gold. Copious white shjt coating the rock below…
