🌱🐝 the bees have to be so confused.. the snow only stayed for a day, and we’ve even gone back up to 7°C one day, which resulted in some of the girls stretching their wings already!

I’ve been busy prepping for the season - wax sheets are added to the frames, buckets cleaned, cleaning the suit, etc💪🏼✨

📸 🌱 🍃

Start with a spot.
A spot you choose,
A spot for which you'll muse.

Perhaps another,
Perhaps ask your mother...

That spot looks fine,
This spot looks grand!

Just choose a spot, and form a plan!
Place your Plant in a pot (or anything, why not?).

Now, this is -your- spot.

It’s February & the hellebores are in bloom, providing a much needed food source for insects, especially for any early emerging ground nesting bees. #GardensHour 🌱

🌱Today’s flower is a variety of Clematis called “Doctor Ruppel”, which flowers in late Spring/early Summer, then a 2nd time, in late Summer. It is beloved by bees, butterflies & particularly hummingbirds, who wage frequent, fierce swooping aerial battles over it, accompanied by furious chittering.

I do like a nicely trained loganberry 😍 one session in winter cutting out fruited canes then tying new ones into supports and you're done. Bending them over in loops helps them fruit even more. Bees go mad for flowers then laden with tart berries like giant raspberries all summer 💜 #gardening 🌱

There are over 20,000 known species of bees in the world. That’s more than all of the world’s bird and mammal species combined.

Of all my native plants, false sunflowers #heliopsishelianthoides tend to attract the widest variety of native bees. This is a broad-handed leafcutter bee #Megachilelatimanus I saw back in summer '24.

🌱Today’s flower is Rudbeckia hirta (Gloriosa Daisy), a perennial related to Black Eyed Susans & Coneflowers. As well as being beautiful, it’s a favoured source of pollen for bees, butterflies & other beneficials. The seeds are a food source from fall through winter for birds, particularly songbirds.

Lovely morning on the #allotment! Amazing how much the weeds are growing already. Poppies everywhere so I can leave lots of those to prettify my plot and keep the bees happy. ♥️🌱
I managed to get onto the #allotment this morning before the rain arrived. Plot one looking pretty much shipshape and ready for the new season! ☺️🌱

🌱Today’s flower is Black Eyed Susan, which are drought resistant & beloved by bees & butterflies. They’re said to be deer resistant but we’ve stopped growing them in our front gardens as they get eaten down to the root by deer every time. They thrive in sunny locations with well drained soil.

Did u know?Global warming makes me so nervous as a solitary bee Mum. My Hairy-Footed Flower Bees usually emerge Feb/March,coinciding with my Daphne flowering(food plant). This winter has been so mild,my Daphne is flowering already. So,I've decided to put the HFFB nesting bricks outside early🤞. 🌍🌱🌿🇬🇧🌱🐝🪲

🌱Today’s flower/photo is of another of our favourites, Garden Speedwell (aka Veronica). These plants are a mainstay in our gardens, come in a variety of colours and are drought tolerant. The long flower spikes are filled with nectar so are extremely popular with bees, butterflies land hummingbirds.

Forestry here to trim parkway tree. All I can think of is dropping logs on poor little ground-nesting bees nestled under soil & smashing my deadwood fences where lots of other #invertebrates friends live. Holding my breath—think positive thoughts for me, #gardening friends! #UrbsInHorto #Chicago 🌱

🌱Today’s flower/plant is Sea Holly (Eryngium) along with some Purple Coneflowers(Echinacea) which go together beautifully. Sea Holly has tiny, silvery needles so I recommend are wearing gloves when planting. Both of these plants are beloved by hummingbirds, bees and butterflies.

🌱Today’s flower/plant is a Sunflower, my phone ID app says it is called “Copper Queen”. We grow a variety of Sunflowers all around our property in sunny spots for the bees, birds & our own enjoyment. Our greedy, insatiable hounds will swallow the seeds whole if they can reach them, though.
