It's really quite strange that Melania The Movie even got a UK distributor, never mind this many screenings in brand recognition cinemas. And by "strange" I mean "I wonder how big the subsidy was."

Isn’t Amazon MGM paying the cinemas a flat fee to screen it? Irrespective of how many tickets sold. Part of the US business sector funnelling money to Trump.

this was originally a very well liked indie horror game. kinda cool it's in literal cinemas now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58XkJzd1ZqY

The network was founded in 1992 at the initiative of a group of thirty cinema exhibitors. Today, with over 1,250 cinemas, it is estimated that almost 60% of admissions for independent European films outside their country of origin take place in Europa Cinemas theatres.

The Europa Cinemas network, funded by the European Commission through the MEDIA Programme, offers operational and technical support to cinemas that commit to dedicating a significant share of their screenings to non-national European films and to developing activities for young audiences.

This must be some kind of fix. I imagine it playing to sold-out, completely empty cinemas all over the country
It's weird that this is playing so widely in UK cinemas. Documentaries aren't usually a big draw. The guy from Vue says "if a film is BBFC approved then 99% of the time we will show it" but c'mon, lots of movies don't get shown at Vue. Certainly not on 100 screens www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

Remember that Sound Of Freedom movie, where in the States (at least) you had people just buying out showings for unspecified others who just never appeared, so the cinemas could make the money on the tickets for no actual cost or work?
January 27, 2026 at 10:23 AM
I'm not recommending all of those films (some I haven't seen) but it's fair to say that whatever your taste, there's a really broad variety of well-liked films in cinemas at the moment. And also a Melania Trump documentary.
January 27, 2026 at 10:18 AM
Imagine going to the Melania Trump documentary in the cinemas instead of Hamnet, Avatar 3, Marty Supreme, Zootropolis 2, No Other Choice, the new Statham, Saipan, Sentimental Value, One Battle After Another (being re-shown), Sinners (also returning) etc etc

Frankly, 5 tickets is pretty high.
I had a look, and Liffey Valley have three showings a day for a week, and have sold 5 seats...
The cinemas are obvious getting something for showing this because it's not like they're getting much at the box office. Especially as their reaction is trying to make it a free speech issue.

'Melania' is not screening in Dutch cinemas, which is a shame because now I can't not go to it.
January 27, 2026 at 10:12 AM
I'm amazed it's in cinemas at all — I assumed it would just be a Netflix thing (like their other sycophantic docs, Beckham, Harry, etc).

But if they have bundled it as you suggest (makes sense) I think it's a mistake — they have drawn attention to just how uninterested people are.
January 27, 2026 at 10:07 AM
Saw another post saying Vue were carrying it, and that 100 cinemas were showing, I assume total not just Vue.

Would be interesting to check the times of the showings - are cinemas putting it in at particularly dead times or in screens that are difficult to fill so that they can get the money without obstructing the core business?

No you're right, my initial thought was a bundle but it'd have to go in with something that cinemas couldn't refuse, and I don't think Amazon do have anything like that.

Nice!!!! Yeah the website is a bit behind when it comes to bigger cinemas

They're paying the cinemas to show to empty rooms the film they made as a bribe

I didn't even know this was a film until I saw your post. I saw Brett Ratner directed and read his bio and now I'm not surprised at all. Also, VUE cinemas in London have sold three tickets. I found this great quote on Reddit: "if you play this movie in planes, people will still walk out" 😁
January 27, 2026 at 9:23 AM
Between one and three tickets have been sold at London cinemas for the opening of 'Melania', Jeff Bezos's naked bung of $40M to #Trump following his re-election.

Exceptionally, Cineworld in Wandsworth has sold FOUR tickets. Wandsworth is the site of the new American Embassy. (These two facts […]
