I've started 2026 with a great day's patch birding in excellent company. Russian white-fronts at dawn, an excellent wader roost, Pintail, Pendulines, a flyover GW Egret (not easy here) and 1,300 finches in a field of Chicory.

2026Dundee150 list currently at 86 after 4 days. It gets a lot harder from here though. Other highlights not shown include Waxwing, Great Northern Diver, Crossbill, Nuthatch, Peregrine, Shoveler, Skylark, Whooper Swan, Woodcock.

Blurred tree branches obscure most of a large white bird, except for its head and beak. This great egret, a tall white bird with a long neck, long legs, a rather large narrow head, and a very long bright orange beak, was trying to hide from me, but a nice break in the branches of the tree it sat in allowed me to get some sneaky shots of its face as it looked to my left.

It's interesting & fun seeing the same birds each day. You can almost make up stories about them! The Great White Egret on the mere seems to prefer it's Heron friend! Another GWE joins the original one sometimes and it always chases it off and goes back to it's Heron friend 😆
The Egret that sit with the Heron every day took a dislike to another Great White Egret that was on the mere his morning Back with it's Heron friend after seeing off the other GWE Harmony restored with the Great White Egret and the Heron back fishing together by the mere!

I cut the strips in July. I broke my arm in August, and I finally finished piecing the flimsy today. Whew. I'm happy to finish the flimsy. #quiltsky

Today on the trail was crowded. Mostly with people I don't usually see, on the first not raining day of the year, so I'm guessing a new year's resolution initiative.

a large white seabird that I believe is a great egret is standing on a grassy cliff overlooking the ocean. its head is pulled close to its body and it is definitely not enjoying the windy conditions
