For this chapter, Guava says: Ch 22- Buckle Up and prepare for the Feels! Ô Comfort Tea Pick your favorite flavor tea and prepare it your way. If you don't have a comfort tea, feel free to try out some of these! For herbal/caffeine free friends: chamomile, lemon ginger, and peppermint are calming. Celestial Seasonings has a Tension Tamer tea that combines lemon, ginger, and peppermint. Please be cognizant if you have any sensitivities to specific herbs. For my caffeine freaks, a nice strong brew will do (Irish/British breakfast tea) with plenty of honey or other sweetener of your choice and a splash of milk if desired. "Mom!!! Mommy, no!!! Momma, please!!!" Stolas sat bolt upright, disoriented and horrified at the broken, sobbing shrieks rending the night apart around him. "Blitzo?" he asked dumbly, trying to process why the screams were erupting from his sleeping boyfriend. Reality finally snapped his brain like a rubber band: Blitzo was caught in the throes of a nightmare! "Shit!!!" Stolas yelped in alarm as a broken howl of grief and horror ripped from the throat of his tormented lover before it dissolved into soul-shredding sobs. "Blitzo!" Stolas called helplessly to him, unsure of what to do, unsure if he should touch him, but completely unable to bear the thought of leaving his love alone in his dream hell. "Blitzo, darling, wake up!" He was about to yell for help when the bedroom door swung open and Ozzie swept in with a panicked Fizzie, sans his prosthetic legs, in his arms. The moment Ozzie lowered him to the bed, Fizz wasted no time squirming up to Blitzo and shaking him with a perfect mix of gentleness and urgency that only a best friend could get away with. "Blitzo! Buddy, you gotta wake up!" Fizzie pleaded, refusing to let up until, finally, the trapped

Video essayist on YouTube and Nebula who often uses video games as a springboard to speak about larger topics of art, philosophy, and politics. His first book, How a Game Lives, is available now from all major booksellers. This year, I’ve been thinking about the different generations of mainstream YouTube video essayists. While the first wave of YouTube essayists may have been inspired by film, television, and/or written essays, many popular 2025 creators are young enough that they grew up alongside the video essay. This younger cohort has been presented a goal that didn’t previously exist! While the first generation of essayists may have turned to YouTube in an attempt to ‘do something’ with their film and philosophy degrees, younger creators may indeed pursue certain fields of study with the goal of disseminating this knowledge as a video essayist. While the goal of becoming a YouTuber can result in a passion for algorithmic success over academic rigor, this new generation is also willing to push the boundaries of the familiar form, creating more ambitious and stylistically striking projects. "Trans Day of Vanishing by Lily Alexandre The best video essay of the year, Alexandre’s work melds text and form in a dizzyingly ambitious trip through an unspeakably awful question: should trans people reduce their social visibility in an act of self-preservation? The essay itself, shot in extreme widescreen, builds a sense of paranoia – Alexandre herself only takes up a fraction of the scene and the urban landscape, cold and artificially lit, stretches out beyond her. It’s a testament to the video’s magnitude that Alexandre literally being tear gassed on the streets of Montreal is only its second most striking scene. The most striking is when she taps into the feed of a public surveillance camera, finding production quality in the constant, unwilling scrutiny she lives under." The 25 Best Films of 2024: A Video Countdown by David Ehrlich A countdown of the best films of 2024, sans traditional script or voiceover, seems outside the realm of typical video essay. And yet, Ehrlich’s 23-minute montage isn’t just a countdown but a conversation made through editing, a weaving together of hundreds of cinematic motifs from an entire year. The montage finds constant moments of delight in juxtaposition: the overture features scenes of Anora, Megalopolis, Dune, Challengers, and dozens more all choreographed together to a song from The Greatest Showman. I Saw the TV Glow functions as a meta-framing device throughout the montage – Justice Smith looks directly into the camera and intones “I watched these tapes over and over again, but they never got old.” The choice of musical accompaniment is, also, revelatory. In one standout sequence, Ehrlich introduces Nosferatu alongside Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’, only to continue the song through his next pick, The Beast, finally climaxing alongside Dion with Challengers. The track is hilarious, yes, but also exactly captures the thematic core of each film. However, it’s the finale of the piece that cements it as Ehrlich’s best work so far. The crescendo seems to come early; after Anora (his #3 pick), the montage escalates into an ecstasy of scenes and sounds and emotion set to an epic rework of Madonna’s ‘Like a Prayer’. And when it seems the montage can rise no higher… it doesn’t. It crashes back down to Earth with the sparse harmonica of Springsteen’s The Promised Land and Ehrlich’s final two picks, No Other Land and Nickel Boys. An impossible level of craft throughout. Death of the Author: An Alan Wake Series Retrospective by Noah Caldwell-Gervais Much as series protagonist Alan Wake can’t help but spiral around his own universe of autofiction, Noah Caldwell-Gervais is helplessly drawn back to developer Remedy’s series of games. Having previously covered Alan Wake, Max Payne, and Control on his channel, Gervais now revisits each along a gargantuan journey to understand the layers of meaning woven throughout Alan Wake 2. Although the runtimes of many video essays have ballooned over the years, only Gervais is capable of keeping his writing on-target and engaging for nearly 200 minutes straight. And as Alan Wake 2 snakes through the themes of nearly every Remedy game, longtime fans of Gervais’ channel will see how this retrospective engages with many of his defining interests: Horror and noir, self-loathing writers, King’s Dark Tower series, goofy Rock and Roll stars. Gervais’ channel seemed incomplete without an essay on Alan Wake – and Alan Wake 2 itself seemed incomplete without an analysis by Gervais. Finally, both are settled.

Sans has the cute blue scale things scattered all over his skeleton part. Their bodies glow in their signature red and blue colours. They'll never appear like this in my comics because it'd slow down the drawing process significantly, this particular comic would've taken me years in this style. Horror is circling Sans' head, holding his hand to plant a kiss on his wrist. They both look happy.

Cherie Priest’s books are great. Highly recommend Maplecroft for fans of Lovecraftian horror (sans bigotry). The Clockwork Century books are a lot of fun, steampunk in 19th century America. The Eden Moore series is Southern Gothic fantasy. All enjoyable reading.

Two months later Killer and Horror are swimming on the surface of the ocean at daytime. Killer: Horror! Look! I caught your fav! Horror: ? Thanks. Killer has found a tiny turtle and passes it to Horror's hand. The turtle meeps in panic. Horror takes a long contemplative look at the turtle in his hand. The tiny thing is coloured exactly like the turtle Horror ate in one chomp in my previous comic, so it's likely its baby. Horror: hmmmmmmmm... Killer: ..aren't you gonna eat it? Horror: ...nah. Horror throws the turtle away, letting it go unscathed. It goes with an "eeeep!" Horror: When it comes to turtles, I've had something way tastier... Horror means Sans' eggs he got to eat. Killer: WHAAAAT!!! Killer thinks about Sans on his back, begging for Horror's tongue. Killer: You got to tell us that story! Horror: heh heh, maybe one day...

I can take a hint, seeya some other time-- He's interrupted by Horror coming over and planting a sweet kiss on his cheek. Horror: hey, I had a lot of fun. So let me know, if you want to go again. Horror swims away without expecting a reply, leaving a warm feeling to Sans' chest. Sans touches the place Horror kissed and "heh"s one more time before leaving. Sans swims towards the lighter waters, the voices of the shiver sending him off. Horror: hm, what's this? You skipped grooming while I was away? Dust: ...nnno..? Horror: Come here. Dust, Killer, Dream and Cross: Aaaaaaaaaa! Nightmare: hehe... The End!

Just holding Horror in his arms is clearly not enough. Horror: I'm back, Nightmare! Nightmare: O-of course you are! Why even leave! Horror: Because the best part.. is coming back home... They press their foreheads together. Nightmare: It better be! Horror: It always is! They share a sweet kiss. Until Nightmare pushes Horror away with his tentacle and arms and grimaces. Nightmare: ugh, you taste like Sans! Horror: Oh! So you've kissed him too? Nightmare falls immediately silent, looking away and pouting. Horror gives a big smile at this juicy discovery. If you read my newsletter "News from the Grid" you know I've been working on a zine collecting reviews of films I watched in October to celebrate Halloween. Well here it is!

A mockup of my zine "Halloween Horror Marathon". It's in DL format (one third of A4). The mockup shows the zine lying open, showing its front and back cover. The front cover shows a ghostly figure draped in a black cloth holding a big animal skull in front of its face. The figure is made of scanlines and hovering over a CRT TV, the screen of which is bleeding. The title of the zine is placed above the figure in bold distressed black font, the word "Halloween" is written in a red script. The back cover is all black and shows white text reading "This is a keepsake of the scares I had in Halloween of 2025. Read it at your own risk..." in an all caps sans serif. At the bottom right of the cover, near the spine is another CRT TV showing a ghost appearing in front of TV static. There are details meant to make the zine look like a VHS case: slits to grab the tape and the tape appearing underneath as well as folds and cracks due to aging on the "box". A mockup showing an interior spread of the zine. Both zines are composed similarly: the film poster sits at the top in the centre of the page, underneath is general info about the film (title, release date, director, genre and themes and whether or not I watched it with my fiancée). There's also my review and an assessment of how scary it was. Behind the posters there is TV static covering the full width of the spread, going from the top and gradually disappearing as it gets closer to the text. The left page is for the film "Let the Right One In", the right page is for "Candyman".
