What we didn't do, after 2010, was also really important -- I'm proud we didn't, for example, start a meretricious metrics-based PhD program in "digital X" as many of our peers did after 2010. There were lives and careers left unharmed by that road not taken.

I love the word "meretricious". And I need to look up "opuscule". I'm guessing it's a portmanteau of "opus" (a creative work, or a penguin) and the "scule" in "corpuscule" and "miniscule", which I can guess means "small".
