A coolish December but Australia posted its fourth hottest year on record in 2025, according to mean temperatures. All of those four hot years have been since 2013. (Data all via the Bureau of Meteorology):

Huge congratulations to my friend Piers Forster on being appointed a CBE. We got our PhDs in Meteorology at the University of Reading in the 1990s and have since worked together on many things including IPCC and the Climate Change Committee. He's a truly inspirational scientist and communicator ☺️

There is no better source for agriculture and botany research in Texas than A&M. They excel at reaching rural Texas, offering technical expertise to ranchers and farmers.

OU has a top-tier meteorology program, which is hugely important for a state that’s both big in farming and tornadoes.

*grumble* Have I mentioned lately that my stepson got out of Asheville a day ahead of the road closures because he was a meteorology major and said “Fuck no, we are GOING NOW.”?

Getting 1st images from our new satellites is always exciting!
They validate performance & show the value for operational meteorology (L-R):

Global map of ozone (Sentinel-5)
Hurricane Humberto (Metop-SGA1)
SO2 concentrations over Southern Europe (Sentinel-4)

Congratulations! Somehow I thought you were already on the payroll! Would love to see National Weather Service regional offices, ofc, as well as university meteorology departments (see, e.g., student-run UGA Weather Dawgs account on X, which has been an invaluable resource for locals for years).

I'm very much not an expert in meteorology, so if you are and have some thoughts, please chime in.

This was mainly a fun afternoon project to make some maps that illustrate my initial skepticism of the findings.

That’s how my college meteorology prof started every class, hand drawn weather map of whatever was happening around Lake Ontario.

We recently hosted a machine learning hackathon with @bomact.bsky.social, the Bureau of Meteorology in Melbourne, Australia for our Momentum Partnership.

It marked a major milestone in advancing our ML applications for weather and climate science across the global Momentum network.

I know that people can die in blizzards, and advanced meteorology saves lives. But I do wish Apple Weather would stop push-notifying me that three hours westward there might be a blizzard tomorrow. I am still going to have to go to work, and Anxiety Brain doesn’t want to know.

Vela always loved looking at clouds, so she studied meteorology. So I guess Serendipity. The expedition she takes part in at the beginning of 'Cloudgazer' was part of the studies. 🌤️🔭 Then she gets tangled up in the hidden conflict around void-tech 🫠 #AwesomeCharacters

Took meteorology in college, and the classrooms were on the top floor of one of the ag school buildings with big windows overlooking the valley.
Prof spent a certain amount of time just telling us what we were seeing out there, in addition to whatever syllabus they had that day.
