The town was decked with greenery yesterday. Not holly & ivy, but olive branches, palms & oleander, with red geraniums, cyclamen & poinsettia, bright in winter sunshine.
Today it's the winter solstice and the mountains are hidden behind sheets of rain. The prospect of the sun’s return seems remote.

Figuring there should probably be some good views near that open area at the opposite end of the pond, I continued around. As I had hoped, I came upon some more open ledges.
We are standing on a ledge of gray rock with a spruce tree to our right, looking out beneath a soft blue sky with a few streaky white clouds. A line of heavier clouds is sweeping across a mountain range along the horizon. Everywhere else is blue skies and bright sunshine. From our right to our left we can see the mountains of the Mahoosuc Range we have hiked the past 2 days. Their flanks are covered with a dark green spruce-fir forest, but numerous gray rock cliffs are visible. A few of the open areas along the ridge crests are also visible.

In many places, the sun does not rise above the neighboring mountains, and whole towns will survive without direct sunshine for weeks.

We also have fabulous, long sunrises and sunsets at this time, with beautiful cotton candy pink skies.

I felt bait-and-switch'd. I flew out during reading week in February 1997 to tour the research lab and it was bright, sunny, and warm. I walked down W8th by Trimble Park and couldn't believe what I was seeing. Snow on the mountains, the city bathed in sunshine.

We are standing on a jagged outcrop of light gray granite covered with pale green and dark green lichen high atop a mountain. To our right are 2 massive ridges running down from a lofty mountain just offscreen right. Their flanks are wooded, their rocky crests are open and covered with stunted dark green alpine vegetation which extends a short distance down their sides before gradually giving way to trees. Several trails are visible as meandering light gray strands. Beyond this mountain on the left are a series of wooded green mountain ranges cascading to he misty horizons. A massive spiderweb of intersecting ski runs stands out along the face of the closest of these mountains.

The sunshine was amazing for the brief time it was there. I guess we get the wind again tonight with more rain, but I was relieved to feet a chilly bite when I took the dogs out. Cold in the mountains means the water falls as snow that can darn well stay there for awhile.

Suddenly, the sky was clearer than it had been in days. I sat down to drink in the sunshine and the views. I was so far ahead of schedule I was able to linger for about an hour. I had a 180-degree view of miles of lowland lake country to the south and mountains to the east and north.
We are on a steep grassy stretch of a mountainside covered with grass, yellow and white wildflowers, and a few large gray rock outcrops. Above the green wooded shoulder of a mountain, we see several lofty mountains cascading into the distance. The sky is clear and bright, but whitewashed and hazy.
