Autocratic regimes are infamous for censoring the news, making sure that the Dear Leader is always portrayed in a favorable light, and ensuring a never ending “propaganda of success”

This, of course, is exactly like that.

Thank you, Didac: as ever, you are far too kind!

Like many things we've covered at the IRS, this is a sea change.

Tax administration is supposed to be non-political.

Tax *investigations* are supposed to be super non-political.

And tax *criminal investigations* are supposed to be walled off from anything remotely political.
Shapley’s appointment is a significant shift for the tax agency — which has historically had two political appointees, its commissioner and chief counsel — and a large promotion for Shapley, who has less experience in Washington than his predecessors, current and former officials said. He will now oversee more than 2,000 employees; he was responsible for about 75 before.

His appointment has startled some of those officials, who fear it reveals that a partisan agenda for tax investigations could be coming — or that it could have the appearance of politicizing an agency that has previously been implicated in partisan scandals.

Congress trained additional scrutiny on the IRS after Nixon’s administration used it to collect information about perceived enemies. Abuse of the tax system was one of the articles of impeachment filed against Nixon in 1974, though he resigned before impeachment proceeded.

🚨 Also—The Trump admin is going back into the database where they quietly changed students' immigration statuses to now quietly change the reason why, to simply: "Other"

Some say this isn't just to back away from previously weak rationale, but to make it harder for students to try being reinstated.

NEWS: It began with Mahmoud Khalil. Now the Trump admin is trying to deport *hundreds* of students by vaguely saying they have criminal records—making them guess why.
Some have traffic violations. Some didn't even commit a crime.

One's "criminal record"? Apparently being a domestic violence victim.
Trump Is Trying to Deport Students Who Show Up in a ‘Criminal Records Check.’ But Many Have Never Been Convicted
What began with Mahmoud Khalil has now expanded into widespread immigration status revocations with no explanation and little apparent recourse.

The SF algebra disease comes for Palo Alto biology? The Harrison Bergeron Unified School District approach helps no one, turns your district into a laughingstock, & mostly just galvanizes parents into voting out the school board as soon as humanly possible. This is such a losing issue for the left.
It is absurd that Palo Alto School district just voted to remove honors biology for all students & already removed honors English. They call it de-laning. I call it an assault on excellence. I took many honors classes at Council Rock High in PA.

The fact that a hyphenated American isn't any less American than anybody else is literally the best thing about this stupid-ass country, the thing that most clearly makes it a redeemable project.

The Supreme Court’s “shadow docket” has cast very different shadows depending on which party holds the White House.

When lower courts blocked Trump admin policies, SCOTUS intervened on an emergency basis to lift those orders in 77% of cases.

For the Biden administration, that number was 0%.
Infographic titled “One Court, Two Standards” compares how the Supreme Court used emergency powers to rule on lower-court injunctions against the Biden and Trump administrations. Two panels show:
	•	Biden Administration: Lower courts blocked policies in 21 cases. All 21 cases are represented by red squares, indicating that 0% of injunctions/TROs were lifted by SCOTUS.
	•	Trump Administration: Lower courts blocked policies in 86 cases. 66 green squares and 20 red squares show that 77% of injunctions/TROs were lifted by SCOTUS.

Key takeaway box below reads:
“Using its ‘shadow docket,’ the Supreme Court granted emergency relief to lift 77% of lower-court injunctions against the Trump administration. It lifted 0% of those against the Biden administration.”

It's almost like it's all political theater or something (the other guys, otoh, are apparently anticipating a drive through Mosul circa 2009)

The Polish communist government declared martial law in 1981, in response to mass societal discontent and protest. It sent out tanks into the streets to intimidate the population.

This, of course, is very different.

It's too long, but it's also the waist: it's nipped in at an angle, as opposed to a curve, on Sanchez. Someone really had it in for her.

Day 3 of fielding media fact-checkers asking whether Zohran Mamdani is a communist.

No. He's not a communist. He's not calling for a centrally planned economy. He's not calling for a single ruling party. He respects pluralism. Some of his ideas are silly, but it's not b/c he's a communist, ffs.
