Over the last decade, glaciers in the European Alps have lost more than 15% of their area.

New study by Codruț-Andrei Diaconu, introducing automated tool to map and quantify glacier area changes (+uncertainties)!

You do realise that even posting about this nonsensical paper is giving it visibility and increasing its altmetric score. It was covered by the Times in the UK as well, despite best attempts of experts to set the record straight

Hey you wonderful EO scientists. Why not nominate your amazing colleague or team or nominate yourself for the next ESA EO excellence award. Nominations have just opened and close 10th Dec. Research cash prize for lucky winners:

Totally agree. Every 10th of a degree matters and AGW is not binary but almost every country around the world has declared a climate emergency yet none are treating it like one.

BTW, just saw the news about GISS. Not great.

Sure that's 2 degs. I was referring to 1.5. But, honestly, would I bet on staying below 2 degs right now....?
jlbamber.bsky.social
Yes I know but take a look at the emissions trajectory and it's pretty black and white. It's gone. There is no plausible way to lower emissions sufficiently now...
jlbamber.bsky.social
Looks like staying below 1.5 degs warming is in the rear view mirror. Let's hope that 2 degs doesn't end up the same.

Here's the latest comparison of global surface temperature observations (red) with IPCC climate model simulations (through March 2025, via @hausfath.bsky.social):
plot comparing global surface temperature observations ("Berkeley Earth" project--red) with IPCC ("CMIP6") climate model simulations (black is average over all models; blue shading shows spread among models)

Last September, I reported exclusively this analysis by Pesticide Action Network

Revealed: Far higher pesticide residues allowed on food since Brexit

- Unlike the EU, Great Britain has slashed protections for scores of food types

Just published, free to read. www.nature.com/articles/s43....

Currently trajectory => dangerous levels of sea level rise from the ice sheets. Will this influence policy? Unlikely, but important to keep banging the drum. As declared by almost all nations: it's an EMERGENCY.

A bit naive IMHO. Some of this funding was used for sustainable energy research. Should we boycott BP/Shell/...EV charging stations as that is adding to their profit or should we support their efforts to provide sustainable energy.....

Beautiful morning on my bike ride along the river Avon into Bristol centre yesterday morning. #cycling

And here's the UoB press release for the paper:

A new study has exposed for the first time the huge loss of glaciers in a global warming hotspot over the past four decades.

It also shows the biggest retreat has occurred in recent years.

That was my point too. IMHO, that's the wrong q. You can define a TP however you like but defining where the TP is in parameter space is, well difficult to impossible....
