I've broken needles enough before that it barely phases me, also helps that I wear glasses for needle fragment protection. But going a bit slower takes down the risk of a shattered needle quite a lot

Random sewing tip from my old costume professor: “pin the shit out of your gathers”
Additionally, having the gathered fabric against the feed dogs and holding your fabric perpendicular helps the fabric move through the machine and your gathers don’t get dragged along and sewn at an angle.
