They are not planning "a violent crackdown" on 10.18. What they are doing is sending a signal to their shock troops to try to cause havoc. But those shock troops will be vastly outnumbered. Go out and protest freely. Do not be cowed.

My 60-something in-laws were asking where its happening in Chicago bc they are visiting and might go. These are people who have NEVER protested.

I don't think it's going to work out in the way they think because what they are doing is to actually promote the protest and the date in a way that the organizers can't on their own. So lots of people will now be searching: October 18 protest who would have had no clue before.

Imagine instead of this city block wide jewel parking lot, we instead see more storefronts with entrances facing the sidewalk and housing built on top

Please note: as of 11:30AM today, agents have restrictions on chemical weapons / "less lethal" munitions they are *supposed* to follow (🫠). This isn't limited to preplanned protests, it also applies to neighbors and rapid responders. If you see pepper balls fired...note it

Chicagoans won a temporary restraining order today that prevents federal agents from using tear gas, pepper spray and other weapons against journalists and peaceful protesters.
We’re fighting back peacefully in Chicago because — unlike Trump — we believe in the rule of law.

Federal agents have been confronted with by “coordinated, complex violence,” Hamilton says.

Hamilton specifically mentions the Saturday incident where he says federal agents were “rammed by 10 vehicles.”

That claim is highly contested — only two people have been charged in connection with that.

so essentially...feds can start violence any time for any reason and then use the public's response to engage in further escalations of violence?

Perry asks again whether, if the inability to execute the law is b/c of the feds' "own provocation, does that matter under the law?"

Hamilton: "No, if that were true, the fact still remains that we are seeing sustained violence against federal personnel and property in Illinois."

Perry turns to the fact that drugs have been dealt in Chicago for decades in violation of federal law.

Perry asks if that means "the president has had the authority for decades to deploy the National Guard here?"

(I also believe she prefaced this hypothetical with "riddle me this.")

I also need to know: I am fairly middle-of-the-road on Taylor Swift but someone I know called her the Greatest Living Lyricist. She is not.

Who is yours? Either the greatest or your favorite?

They say that Jesus is the way but then they gave him a white face

I think people on the broad left need to stop getting in front of themselves like this and be able to trumpet a victory for people won by beating the fuck out of the GOP until they cave *as a victory for us and for Americans* rather than as a secret GOP win.
kwcollins.bsky.social
If Dems win the standoff and get their policy demands, yes they will have substantively helped millions of Americans (a good thing, to be clear), but also they will have kept Republicans from a self-inflicted wound in upcoming elections

I love people's creativity and the various ways they have found to support each other. I've seen several examples of people doing this in Chicago. If you know a local vendor, can you do the same for them? Sell their goods so they won't be vulnerable to ICE?

I spoke to another pastor after publication, Rev. David Swanson.

He's only been to the facility once (last Friday), and wasn't shot w/pepper balls.

Instead, he says senior Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino just walked up to him — in full clerical garb — and began shoving.

He put it this way:
I've been at many protests in our city over the years for a variety of different things, in my clergy attire, desiring to be a presence for peace in situations that can get volatile, desiring to be a person who different sides can be able to approach and talk with and have conversations with. I do think this is one of the important roles that faith leaders can play in contentious public situations.

This was the first time that I felt like there was absolutely no regard and no respect for a person who was visibly associated with the faith tradition. It did not seem like it made one iota of difference.

Yeah I do think he is smart enough to know that getting confrontational with the ISP is not going to work, but most people don't know that or don't care and want him to anyway. People are pissed so I hope he gets a bit more ACTIVE
