The Scopes Trial began 100 years ago today. Why do we even remember it? The power of theatre. Live performance makes things real and relatable.
Theater Helps Us Remember the Scopes Trial 100 Years Later
'Inherit the Wind' changed how people understand, and remember, the legendary Scopes trial.

Madness. Absolute madness. This is entirely about the Epstein Files and you can't convince me otherwise at this point. Miller and Hegseth want Generals who will take over blue cities but it looks like that's clearly not a priority for the guy in charge. Number 1 is covering for him.

I know Trump and his minions all have sneering contempt for kids with special needs, but trust me when I say that their parents will absolutely fucking destroy anyone who messes with the special education supports to which they are entitled by law.

There are reports that the *entire* office of special education at the US Dept of Education has been cut. These hardworking folks ensure kids with disabilities get equal access to a quality education.

America’s children deserve better than this.

"Trump’s stated grounds for his abuses of power are not actual reasons, they are pretexts created for purely instrumental ends. And Kristi Noem did not “stare down” mobs of antifa terrorists in Portland."
Well put, Greg.
Propagandists are not “provocateurs.” Trump’s stated grounds for his abuses of power are not actual reasons, they are pretexts created for purely instrumental ends. And Kristi Noem did not “stare down” mobs of antifa terrorists in Portland. That’s because there isn’t any serious network of organized leftist violence in the United States, no matter how loudly Miller shrieks otherwise. Grasping how committed MAGA is to such industrial-scale deceptions is critical to getting this broader moment right.

Susan Collins is the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, which means she has considerable power to influence the administration but she prefers to mumble weak protestations to the media

I have given this “Quiz” every year to my law school class, and as smart as they have been, none of my students got every question right.

So they would not have qualified to vote in Alabama in 1965…that is, if this test had been consistently enforced.

@walterolson.bsky.social at the Cato Institute emphasizes the same thing that struck me so much: the enforcement mechanism in this compact. He calls it a "retroactive push-button guillotine."

(The DOJ is standing there at the button; the university is the one whose neck is below the guillotine.)

New from me at Cato: I go through the numerous and massive First Amendment and academic-freedom violations of Trump's proffered "compact" with universities and then talk about the mechanism by which it would be enforced, by way of what I describe as a "retroactive push-button guillotine."

I really don't know what it means for a RIF to be "Democrat-oriented." Either they are targeting RIFs in Democrat house districts or they are targeting perceived Democrat employees. Regardless, sounds like an impermissible reason coupled with a First Amendment issue under Rutan v. Republican Party.
