Surveys have always recorded the public as believing crime is worsening, irrespective of whether official statistics are rising or not. This is because media report the most dramatic violent or property crimes. Meanwhile crimes by the powerful remain mainly hidden
Is London in the grip of a crime wave? It’s not so simple
Perception of runaway crime partly blamed for ‘driving away the super-rich’ but in reality some high-profile offences such as watch theft are falling

I’m afraid that if you emigrate to Dubai for the tax breaks and 24-hour security, you really should give up your citizenship here for someone who wants it.

Many displaced Gazans (90% of the population) "will find fields of rubble where their homes once stood."

No, almost all of them will find rubble. 92% of residential buildings have been destroyed, 88% of commercial buildings. 62% of people have lost their property documentation, back to the Nakba

Nik Storonsky, the founder of Revolut, has left the UK and become tax resident in Dubai - escaping more than £3bn of UK tax.

Could we have stopped him leaving? Either with the carrot of a more competitive tax system, or the stick of an exit tax?

Some thoughts:

Why does this tax exile 'foreigner' think our government should discuss policy with him? He should feck off back to Monaco. Made his choice based on his own interest, to avoid tax. Anything he has to say will be only in his own interests, again.

Of course the super rich will leave the country. Just like all of those private schools that will close when VAT is introduced on fees.

Former Head of Comms for the IEA, Annabel Denham, says the super rich will leave if we have a wealth tax.

Yes, the very same IEA that brought us Liz Truss’ disastrous mini budget. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Green Party leader Zack Polanski explains that their taxable assets can’t leave. #bbcqt

The political under-acknowledgment of ADHD and similar conditions stems from fear: that recognising it means more sick notes and benefits.

But the cost of neglect is higher: homelessness, addiction, prisons, exclusion. “Economically inactive.” The system pays later for what it ignores now.

Sympathies. I once had a big talk to do in Paris and lost my voice. Squeaked some of it out and in the end just pointed at my slides... terrible. And couldn't network with all the people! I'm still gutted years later!

You should not control a nuclear arsenal if you cannot tell the difference between fiction and reality. The story needs to be told through the lens of mental illness

Trump has gone totally mad. It's 25th Amendment time all day, every day. He's living in a totally invented, fictional world. And he's old and in ill-health.

It's outrageous, reckless, choose your word that Republicans haven't done more to deal with this.

Trump: "The restaurants were all closing, now you can't get into a restaurant. They're opening up new restaurants. It took 12 days for us. We sent in not politically correct military. We sent them in based on merit."

www.itv.com/news/granada... Have a 'near miss' on a plane = full investigation of what happened. Get wrongly convicted and spend years in prison? crickets... The criminal justice system should have the same systems as other safety critical systems - incl. investigations when things go wrong.

I still love Anthony Bourdain’s impassioned defense of Latino cuisine and immigrant workers: “I walked into restaurants and always, the person who had been there the longest, who took the time to show me how it was done, was always Mexican or Central American.” #HispanicHeritageMonth

seriously expected to believe that someone at risk of deportation, someone who may have risked life and limb and undergone extreme hardship to get to US etc. would go to an ER (where I presume you're asked questions about your details etc.) with 'sniffles'.

I know journals are in tight spot to get reviewers etc. etc. - but honestly, an email nagging me on 10th October that I haven't responded to their 8th October invite - just makes me disinclined to answer positively!

aha - thanks. I hadn't noted the new social media rules. But then surely rules might include things like - don't be on fascist social media sites?
ctmccartney.bsky.social
wow - that's disappointing. I did think there isn't much legal chat on here - at least not domestic. All the legal people seem to be US based! Strange choice IMHO to be still over there.
