I’m not really surprised that a Catholic church did this in Chicago. But I couldn’t help making this.
A meme of a scene from Lord of the Rings. Gimli,a dwarf, looks at Legolas the elf. In this edit, gimli says “I did not expect to be fighting the fascists alongside a Catholic Priest.” In the next panel, Pope Leo is superimposed over Legolas’ face, and replies, “How about alongside a friend?” Gimli replies, “Aye, I could do that.” (All in reference to the protests in which ICE agents turned away a priest bringing the communion to detained prisoners in chicago.

So while there is ostensible freedom to range far and wide, practice is mainstream normcore masquerading as liberal-ish.

But teachers steal from those who come before, and districts/school cultures may impinge the freedom to reeeeeallly get wild with curricula. On the ground, lots of Lang course and lots of Lit courses fall back on the “classics” that are mostly middle of the road and not controversial
drewdaudelin.bsky.social
That said, what happens in a classrooom cnman be very different. A school might give tons of leeway. I have experimented with a “no dead white guys” AP Lang course, And I bet you could make a killer Lit course without touching (sonorous voice) the Canon of Great Works. Would be fun!

On the Lit side, there’s a wide range of texts, lots of them modern & diverse.
drewdaudelin.bsky.social
I was mulling this over b/c I think there’s a lot that CB does to at least toss a bone to lefties. AP Lang test frequently centers passages from women & minorities (just off the dome, Joyce Carol Oates, Sonia Sotomayor, Benjamin Banneker, all appeared as recent test Qs).
drewdaudelin.bsky.social
Partly ai suppose because many people see College Board AS “the left,” not imagining there’s more. CB’s tepid defense of Af Am Hist., and the general breadth of the suggested reading list for Ap Lit, are enough for many

Reading this thread, so it’s “pay for this product BUT ALSO pay for an attorney to review our slop.” Why not skip step #1?

Something something “not-for-profit corporation” something something….

As others note— there are benefits to students when merit aid is tied to PSAT/SAT test scores. It sucks but it’s the game, and at least some part of our mission is cynically giving students every edge in the money chase

This piece on student loan debt held by older adults will get a lot of attention (or at least would during a normal news cycle). I'm surprised that Parent PLUS loans also didn't get a mention.
Student-Loan Debt Is Strangling Gen X
For many in the “forgotten generation,” the promise of higher education has become an albatross of debt and regret. And it’s only getting more burdensome.

New from 404 Media: landlords are demanding potential tenants hand over employer login credentials so a tool can verify their income. I was sent screenshot of the tool, Argyle, downloading much more data than necessary to approve the renter. Opt-out means no housing

Screenshots shared with 404 Media show tenant screening services ApproveShield and Argyle taking much more data than they need. “Opt-out means no housing.”

Giving students thoughtful, personalized feedback and instruction is not a problem that originates from the difficulty for an instructor to generate feedback, it is a problem that originates from institutions pivoting to student:instructor ratios where that dynamic is not logistically feasible.

Yesterday, Meta unveiled a new "feed" on its platforms that will exclusively feature AI-generated videos.

This overshadowed another big announcement...

On Tuesday, Meta launched a super new PAC geared towards electing politicians that will block any AI regulation.

Hello?

4. It still doesn't address the *root* causes of crime. Surveillance is not a theory of sustainably preventing crime or keeping people safe. Surveillance gets convictions, but do convictions lower crime rates city or state-wide? No! Put that money to things that do: housing, education, health.

‘Booty’ and ‘butt’ are synonyms.

‘Call’ and ‘dial’ are synonyms.

But, a ‘booty call’ and a ‘butt dial’ are VERY different things.

Remembering MN house speaker Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark and their beloved dog Gilbert. Murdered in June at their home by a rightwing Trump-voting evangelist, who also shot another MN lawmaker and his wife at THEIR home, 9 and 8 times, respectively (miraculously, they survived).
