Our America is beautiful and theirs is so ugly
A New Yorker cover shouldn’t make me feel like this, but here it is, making me feel like this

Dick Cheney was a FATHER. He was a HUSBAND. What kind of monster would cackle ablut how he's being flayed alive by demons in a replica of an Abu Ghraib torture cell for all eternity while the angels sing and rejoice above just because he "violated the geneva convention" and "killed a million people"

It is also worth saying that everyone who mocks some supposedly fake discipline like “gender studies“ or “Africana studies“ is also really excited about degree programs in things like “AI prompt engineering.”

Nothing wrong with a “fake” discipline if it flatters your world view and bank account!
It is worth saying that putting “Africana studies” in scare quotes as if it’s a ridiculous concept is not a political argument. It’s just racism. “Africa is not worthy of a major” is the implication. Yeah dude you’re just racist. (From Gerard Baker at the WSJ today)

It bears repeating: USDA has a $5 billion contingency reserve that it refuses to utilize to continue SNAP benefits. This was the USDA's *own plan* at the start of the shutdown—now quietly deleted from its website.

This is as blatant an example of "hunger is a policy choice" as you will ever see.
Trump administration says it won't tap emergency funds to pay food aid
The move means 42 million people will miss SNAP benefits in November unless Congress acts.

when it comes to Confederate statues, you gotta melt the shit down or otherwise fuck it up so badly it cannot be repaired

bc if there is even a possibility that it can be restored?? these motherfuckers are gonna put it right back up at the earliest opportunity
Feels symbolic that a Confederate statue first installed in 1901, at the peak of the consolidation of the Jim Crow system—when the states of the former Confederacy were in the midst of revising their constitutions to disfranchise Black citizens—has been reinstalled.

A statue of Confederate general Albert Pike, which had been pulled down during the Black Lives Matter movement, has been put back up in Washington, D.C.'s Judiciary Square.

It’s Orvy-approved.
ROAD TO NOWHERE is out in one week! Find it at a bookstore near you (and request it at your local library).

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

Either this ends with some sort of truth and reconciliation process where a very large number of people go to prison for a very long time or we will take a short pause and then start doing it again, but worse.
A Naperville man was hauled away by federal immigration agents Thursday morning as his two sons watched, the older boy begging them not to hurt his father and tearfully asking for a chance to speak to him before they left.

“We need to start talking about the rights of young people themselves”
"far too many who see themselves as progressive LGBTQ 'allies' have been far too fearful of further offending the perpetually offended 'parents’ rights' crowd to prove themselves proactive advocates for these vulnerable and oppressed young people."

Don’t Just “Protect” Trans Youth, Actually Support Them
A right-wing “parents’ rights” movement is sweeping the country, and its ramifications for young people and LGBTQ people have already proven disastrous. So why are so many on the left repeating their ...

As Doug points out on this pod: Dense walkable cities are the antidote to fascism.

The route to fascism lies in empathy free living where you live in your unwalkable suburban bubble, road rage against other people in cars, and only interact with people outside your family when buying something.
The message consultants all say that when you discuss urbanism you're definitely never supposed to bad-mouth cars, lest you turn off thin-skinned suburbanites. But fuck it, I'm not running for office, the world is burning, & YOLO, so: cars fucking suck!
Yes, you weenies: a war on cars
Sarah Goodyear and Doug Gordon join me to discuss their new book and why a future with fewer cars is a happier one.

How about a press conference made up of Democratic leadership near the White House with the demolished East Wing in the background, talking about the government shutdown and Trump's warped priorities and demolition of public goods, including not just the East Wing but health care and so much else?

When people admonish protesters to be “peaceful” what they’re doing is putting the onus for peace on the public, but the state is responsible for the peace. The people you should be admonishing to be peaceful are the cops.
Los Angeles, CA -

Absolute chaos resulting from LAPD charge using batons, horse mounted units, “less lethal” projectiles. Protesters going in every direction. LAPD themselves don’t seem to know where protesters or press are supposed to be.
