It's not like the Nobel prizes are perfect. The one Obama got was also questionable to say the least, even as a "behave like you deserved this" generous reading.

But giving one to appease the ego of that bastard or in fear of how he'd react otherwise I feel would stain them forever. No going back.

I wasn't surprised that my post about not loving the Golden Age sci-fi writers got a lot of... engagement. 😅

What *did* surprise me was that when I casually mentioned that Ray Bradbury was the lone exception, a ton of great writers chimed in to echo that sentiment.

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.

You’ve always refused to put your name to film adaptions of your work. I know this is going to be hard to put a figure on, but how much money do you think you’ve turned down, for taking a moral standpoint on this?

Well, they asked me if they could give me a huge amount of money to bring out these Watchmen prequel comics – which they were going to do anyway - and that was probably a couple of million dollars. I should imagine with all of the films it would be another few million? In a way it’s really empowering to do that. You can’t buy that kind of empowerment. To just know that as far as you are aware, you have not got a price; that there is not an amount of money large enough to make you compromise even a tiny bit of principle that, as it turned out, would make no practical difference anyway. I’d advise everyone to do it, otherwise you’re going to end up mastered by money and that’s not a thing you want ruling your life. Money’s fine if it enables you to enjoy your life and to be useful to other people. But as something that is a means to an end, no, it’s useless.

I was in love with Harrow County at like, page 5.

But seeing this art piece at the end of the volume sealed that deal. Whenever I share it around, it gets people's attention (and then I get to recommend Harrow County.)
