My book on art was published on 14 August 2025. Here is a flyer which offers 20% reduction. I hope you enjoy it. The publisher has left the AI AlT text on the Figures, but they say that they will replace it. Let us hope so.

Svanto Paabo on the possibility of using DNA to de-extinct a mammoth (or a dire wolf or a thylacine or ...)
"you can make an elephant have hair, with some mutation taken perhaps from a mammoth or maybe another animal. But that won’t be a mammoth: it’ll be an elephant masquerading as a mammoth."

Be careful what you wish for. If they replaced Albanese (which would be a good idea) we could end up with Marles (frying pan...fire). Chalmers would be better. Actually it is a pretty talentless lot. In the last parliament the ALP had some stated ideas. None implemented. Maybe go back to them.

Australian newspapers are reporting only the ceasefire, not Israel’s violation of it. The bombing hasn’t stopped but that’s an inconvenient truth.

The greatest relief must be for the people of Palestine, if the Zionists can accept that they should not continue to obliterate them.

Marco Rubio whispers into Donald Trump's ear.

For once you can believe AI. But it is more than that. The continuous occupation goes back much longer than that for over 100000 years. And certainly much longer than any particular set of beliefs or the writing down of them.

This powerful JB Pritzker response to Trump's lawless threats is another reminder of what I tried to argue this morning: Pritzker understands Stephen Miller's theory of this moment, and he's responding accordingly:

The Supreme Court ruled in Powell v. McCormack (1969) that the House cannot exclude a member who meets the constitutional qualifications (age, citizenship, residency). That case firmly established that a Speaker or majority cannot refuse to seat someone who meets those requirements.

2/2 But I'm crying out for someone to answer our politicians and let people say "Palestinians have been suffering bloodshed since Irgun and the other Zionist gangs began their assaults during the British Mandate. Since 7 October they have suffered unprecedented blitzkrieg and genocide. A Holocaust."

archaeoiain.bsky.social
Absolutely. Sometimes less is more. The Netanyahoo narrative was written before the IDF let Hamas through the fence. The whole "greatest loss of life since the Holocaust, Final Solution for Palestine, Bloody massacre, You can't use the line we stole from you of the River to the Sea..." 1/2

Yeah, I am a bit in the same boat. Then I confront what historians do, and some of them do not let the lack of facts get in the way of a good story. But there is a good story with much of the stuff--particularly gold torcs, and maybe rhino cliff hunting.

Kristi Noem confronts enemy combatants in the Portland war zone today.

Matt, it is up to us as archaeological and heritage professionals to create narratives that are widely appreciated in the community of non-professionals. What we do and produce will only be highly valued through the demonstration that such materials are essential to highly valued stories.

They had been placed. There was abundant documentation before the invasion of the lobbying by the so-called heritage people to get their hands on the materials that lie at the foundation of our society.

You should have tried coming to Australia 50 years ago. There was much talk then of "Wilderness" and much less of the likelihood that what was then thought wild had an Aboriginal history, particularly of burning. It took a while for the message to get through.

I encourage you to listen to Greta Thunberg's full statement. Thunberg seeks a just and sustainable world for all, rather than short-term financial gain for the few. The West's political leaders are exposed as complicit, unprincipled or cowardly. End the occupation #SaveGaza #FreePalestine. #auspol

Cypress in Autumn fog
#photography #NaturePhotography #landscape
A bald cypress tree cluster rises from calm, mist-covered water. The tree's reflection is slightly obscured by ripples and a low fog that drifts across a forested shoreline. The soft morning light brings out hues of green, blue and brown, reflected in the lake water.
