Boulez is going to the charity shop. It's just not good enough. #NowPlaying the Böhm Siegfried which is much more like it. Better in every way. As fast as you need it to be. Tremendous through line - it really does sound like one (big) single piece.

Tomorrow is Record Store Day Black Friday, sadly we won’t be participating by stocking overpriced exclusive releases scraped from the bottom of a barrel.
What we will be doing is our own version of Black Friday by giving away a free copy of this LP to the first 3 paying customers to ask for one 😎

More Wagner homework so #NowPlaying the Boulez centenary recording. And he goes at quite some speed - you do lose a bit of detail sometimes. RIP Donald McIntyre who sadly passed away recently - singing The Wanderer here and he's really good.

I’ve written a piece on the curious lack of media and political interest in the issues faced by our national @britishlibrary.bsky.social. This is strange given we live in a world where ideas, knowledge and research are a long-term source of innovation and insight

Blimey I had completely forgotten that I own that record. I have put it on the pile for tomorrow. Genuinely cannot remember what it sounds like.
I spent a lot of time this semester explaining why it produces bad work but at the end of the day, they're being asked to do a thing they find difficult, and this makes it easy for them, without any meaningful consequence. And the university encourages them to use it.

That is such a fantastic record
This week Nathan Gill, Reform UK’s Leader in Wales will be sentenced for 8 charges of Russian bribes.

Here’s Farage calling him an “honest, decent and honourable man”.

Let’s not forget that whilst he was taking the bribes, Farage was making similar pro-Russian speeches in the European Parliament.

That is such an excellent record. Love Neko Case.

Early homework today for the next part of the Ring Cycle at Covent Garden so #NowPlaying Siegfried cond. Janowski. Hugely underrated Cycle and overall preferable to some other big name studio versions (Solti, Karajan, Levine, Haitink, I am looking at you)

Getting my homework done for Covent Garden the week after next so #NowPlaying Věc Makropulos by Janáček (which I don't know as well as his other mature works) whilst reading a PhD thesis, which constitutes a pretty good day at work I reckon.

Why, yes, More. by Pulp is #NowPlaying on my record player *again*. The real question is for anyone who hasn't listened to it yet: why not?

#Nowplaying volume 2. Worth it for the first track ("Jeannine"). This is my only proper OG @bluenoterecords.bsky.social pressing, though I can't remember where I got it (it was ages ago). Will keep this old one when the Tone Poet reissue arrives.

I am going to go back for another PhD when I retire if I can afford it. I started out doing history and I still miss it.

Yes! Old memories activated. Borders had an excellent music section in terms of coverage but they were always more expensive. But back in the day they were occasionally good for hard-to-find titles (cd releases on Constellation being a good example).

Donald Byrd is #NowPlaying in my front room. At The Half Note Café volume 1. Tone Poet reissue on @bluenoterecords.bsky.social and sounds absolutely amazing. Proper hard bop, no messing about. Excellent! And excited for the volume 2 reissue.

Hüsker Dü’s miracle year wasn’t because of happenstance or good luck; it was due to hard work, inner strength, and a big, unforgettable sound. Here's a look back on this formative era for the band.

Am having a slow start today (worked late yesterday evening because reasons) so #NowPlaying some proper hard bop whilst drinking my coffee. I should start EVERY day like this.

Pretty much perfect

Love that record. Remains my favourite thing that they've done.

Splendid evening with @operanorth.co.uk last night for some Puccini: thanks very much! Looking forward to Britten and Mozart in February. At the end of this month, off to London for some Janáček, which I am particularly excited for.

LOVE Fishbone. Fine choice to accompany your video!

Slow Listening. I am #NowPlaying the new Neko Case record (finally!) and it's absolutely excellent. Is there a better singer out there right now? And am loving the orchestral arrangements. As with anything she does, an essential purchase.
