Collect a claim from one side, collect a claim from the other, present them both to the reader with an awkward shrug and a "who can say?"

And the photo choice -- Noem's looking down ... on what? The reverse angle showed a small crowd and a quiet street. But can't show that, it's biased to one side!

A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

I know not everyone is who they thought they would be under a fascist, authoritarian regime. That's okay. But it's time to do more than react and post about it. It's time to get organized—including mapping or creating lines of support and defense in your community.

They're talking about killing leftist activists. They're talking about murdering people organizing in defense of immigrant communities, doing mutual aid work, and protesting their violence. They are talking about murdering people like me and my friends. We must do more than acknowledge it's fascism.

My gosh. After the US bombed multiple boats in the middle of the ocean, murdering people on grounds that they were allegedly "carrying drugs," the US Attorney General says "Just like we did with cartels, we're going to take the same approach, President Trump, with Antifa."

The biggest source of "this isn't fun anymore" on social media is actually not "dedicated harasser decides to make your life miserable"! It's "constantly running into people from a social/behavioral cluster that has radically different norms than you want to deal with".

like seriously team, I know y'all are working on both improving Discover and on better reply sentiment filtering and all, but it's going to take a while to tune it properly and a "never show my post on Discover" setting would be a 10 minute fix that would get 65% of why people want private accounts

I had a post reach the Discover feed today and was once again reminded of how many people on this site are not house trained.

This -- seeing the books that are being targeted most NOW really makes what is being done hit harder. It actually undercuts the real threat to show books that are famous and still selling fine.

A call to bookshops when setting up banned books displays. Feature alive authors who could be struggling due to this. Yes, Stephen King gets banned but he's doing ok financially. So many others are not.

Just a reminder that Banned Books Week isn’t about selling more copies of 1984. It’s about keeping authors and teachers and librarians safe and making sure all of us have the freedom to read widely. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

Yup! Abolitionists also describe it as a tactic: it's one part of what needs to happen to build a safe world for all of us. In some ways, it's one of the easier parts.

I had a lot of convos with people who said they were sympathetic, but Defund the Police was a "bad slogan". I told them it wasn't a slogan. It was an answer. It was an answer to the constant question "what can we do to actually lower crime and make our neighborhood's safer?"

Anyway. Here we are.

I think people are being weird re OOP. We're talking about representative democracies in highly advanced divisions of labour; it's not childish magical thinking to expect the people who have sought office to have superior insight into core aspects of their roles, it's the entire basis of our system.

Holy cow. This screenshot is like saying “because I have an idea it must be possible.” The plumber analogy is instructive but wrong. It’s more like if she had a plumber over and asked her to make her laundry do itself. It’s not something a plumber can do. It’s not something anyone can do.
seed-corn-thoughts.bsky.social
This is basically magical thinking. It is the thought process of a small, frightened child who just wants mommy to make the pain stop and is getting angry that she can't.
The issue is that this is a grown adult, not a small child, and also when the Democrats do things it's never good enough.

Seeing this amazing woman being a professional in halls I’ve walked before inspired me that I could do it myself.

I know that my coming out has inspired a couple of people to start coming out themselves, and I feel so honored to have helped.

Don’t be afraid to be yourself. It’s worth it.

The specifics of the RIFs I’ve seen in group chats have been staggering. Bracing & reminding myself these are specifically intended to cause fear & distress.

Please share URLs for any good trackers you seen as they emerge. (I want more than OMB’s version) fedscoop.com/trump-federa...
Table of how many federal employees have been laid off in the latest RIF (Reduction in Force). This is from an OMB legal filing from Oct 10. For each agency, it lists number of fired employees, RIF notice date, and whether the administrations has recalled any of those employees to do work. Total headcount is 4,100 across 8 agencies. Treasury (1446) and HHS (1200) are the most affected. EPA (30) had the fewest layoffs this time.

When writing alt text for an image of text, it's not enough to just write "screen shot of text from article." Sighted users get to know what is in that screen shot, so why don't blind users deserve the same? The alt text should include all the actual text in the image.
