It’s an evening dress worn by Empress Maria Feodorovna, 1880-83, currently in the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.

I suspect that @rosewind.bsky.social would kill to own it.

What’s the hourly rate for a punka wallah these days?

If they now target the tzatzi or taramasalata plants, Europe could see a double-dip recession.

I’m here all week, try the veal, etc

Awful news about Lewis Moody

Why have these MND diagnoses only started so recently? Pro era? League has always been professional though. Performance-enhancing drugs? Their use was rife in the game 25 years ago.

A 3,500 year-old Egyptian glass cosmetic jar with two little duck heads!

Glass was a relatively new material at that time, so this jar would have been a precious possession.

From Merit’s beauty case, found inside Theban tomb (TT8) of Merit and her husband Kha in 1906. 📷 Museo Egizio

#Archaeology
Museo Egizio Turin photo showing a small, dark-blue, core-formed, round glass jar which tapers in at the shoulders below the neck. It has yellow, white, and light blue festoon decoration trailed around the main body. There is a single yellow trail just below the neck of the jar. There is a dark-blue circular glass lid, the top of which is adorned with two dark-blue duck heads with yellow bills, a yellow trailed stripe on the top of each duck’s head, and indents for their eyes. The jar is displayed on a perspex (?) stand against a grey background. Glass jar dimensions: 7.6 cm x 9.6 cm.

Core-forming is one of the earliest glassmaking techniques. Glassmakers shaped the body of the vessel around a core, wound colored trails around it. They then let the vessel cool and removed the core.

This year’s green-fanged tube-web spider has taken up residence behind the garage door controller as one always does at this time in autumn. It’s a right big ‘un. Halloween must be coming. @gingertotty.bsky.social @rosewind.bsky.social

Comics in the 70s cost pennies and got so many of us reading.

Dad got John and I subscriptions to the Beano and Dandy, as well we reading us books and - just encouraged us to be voracious readers of ANYTHING… he told Stories. He wrote poems. He read all manner of stuff. He gave us the best gift

I cannot tell you how many parents I met across the last few events who said that comics started their kids reading. Just comics. It’s the one thing that worked. 🫡

Finally told my tutor that I've been drowning in anxiety. She told me that:

a) she has every faith in me

and,

b) everyone living on campus has had a slow start because they're all riddled with fresher's flu.

With all sympathy to the stricken, this was *exactly* what I needed to hear.

Used to buy my brothers, father & uncles new wallets each Christmas. It's always been a reliable gift for men. But now they all just use their phone to pay. No cards. No cash. I'm sure it's convenient for them but now I have to work out a new standard gift item for male relatives

Someone doesn’t know that The Economist never uses bylines and has a vigorous fact-checking editorial policy. Such a shame when ideology and empirical facts collide.

Hey, Jesse, when I write something, I sign my name to it. Were you afraid of being called out for your, once again, shoddy research and easily falsified claims in your Economist article? You should really take some pride in your work.

Here's the "director's cut" of my article in The Economist (read: too long and insufficiently edited) plus some opining on how hard (impossible?) it is to interpret youth gender research when there is no shared definition of "gender"

Why Deepseek won't
replace other Large Language Models: I just asked it a question about Liu Zhijun who was railways minister imprisoned for corruption and it gave me a long and detailed reply but then deleted it and said 'let's talk about something else'!
