“If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.”

Timothy Snyder
Seen along Hwy 5 in Chanhassen - a poster sign on the pedestrian overpass with a big red heart and the words, "HONK IF U ❤️ DEMOCRACY." #NoKingsChaska #NoKingsChanhassen
Huh.
You can count The Minnesota Star Tribune among the Sunday newspapers that did not put protest news on the front page

In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

Paint on streets is *not* infrastructure.
Another reminder that a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.

For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says — Streetsblog USA
Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikes and people in cars and on foot, a new study of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

"Don’t tell me that guns aren’t the problem, people are. I’m sick of hearing it. The darkness first takes our children who then kill our children, using the guns that are easier to obtain than aspirin. We sacralize death’s instruments and then are surprised that death uses them."

Cardinal Dolan’s days in New York are numbered after he compared Charlie Kirk to St. Paul over the weekend.

Pope Leo is widely expected to replace him with a pro-immigrant border bishop, Daniel Flores.

I’d like the guy to be caught and it is concerning to me that they appear to have no idea what they’re doing, no solid leads, and are instead making up bullshit based on bullet casings and leaking it to right wing outlets
NBC News: "Is it your understanding that [Charlie Kirk's shooter] may be close by or still in Utah?"

The commissioner of Utah’s Department of Public Safety: "We have no idea"

Acts of political violence aren’t acceptable. Non-political school shootings aren’t acceptable. Sacking the legislature isn’t acceptable. Military occupation of peaceful American cities isn’t acceptable. Abductions conducted in courthouse hallways by masked agents of the state aren’t acceptable.

The problem with allowing guns everywhere is that no one is safe anywhere.

Watch for these moves in the coming days:

1.) Instant sanctification by the leader
2.) Rituals that migrate into rallies
3.) Attribution-before-evidence
4.) Policy ratchet tied to grief: calls for emergency powers, campus purges
5.) Merchandising the memory,
When Tragedy Becomes Theatre - Don’t Let Them “Horst Wessel” Charlie Kirk
The warning isn’t about equivalence; it’s about a tactic. Authoritarians turn death into myth, grief into mobilization, they are experts at turning funerals into furnaces. Resist the myth-making

The MN Republicans who voted against a 2023 safety bill that included “red-flag” provisions, "which permit the state to temporarily confiscate firearms from individuals deemed to be a threat to others or themselves" need to hear from their constituents now.
It's the guns.

Too many easily accessible guns leading to too many lives changed or ended by gun violence.

Congress needs to reinstate the federal ban on assault weapons and we need laws to end this "pandemic of arms".

Be good to your loved ones & put some kindness back into the world today.
Speaking of uncontrolled guns.
At least 3 students are in critical condition after a shooting at Evergreen HS in Colorado.

This is the 47th shooting that took place at a school in the US so far this year: 24 on college campuses, 23 on K-12 school grounds. This happened less than an hour after Charlie Kirk shooting in Utah.

What Trump dumped on Congress from the Epstein files. Looks like D.C. really did run out of black Sharpies. For context, this is Document 380, a motion in limine filed by Maxwell’s defense team on October 29, 2021, trying to block evidence tied to “Accuser-3” from being heard at trial.
