To note very bluntly my view of the next span of years, I will quote Neville Chamberlain: "It is the evil things we fight against, brute force, bad faith, injustice, oppression, and persecution and against them I am confident the right will prevail."

But when it comes to it, if it comes to it, in that awful moment of decision, yes, you will want the old grandmas and grandpas at the front, as many of them as you can get, so those terribly young fellows with the rifles understand what a wicked, awful thing is being asked of them.

So I sit here, puzzling through this thing, thinking - perhaps wrongly - that I can see, as if with the eyes of the fates - the field and the way the lines must go.

And hoping I am wrong and the thing can be changed. Buford, after all, did change that vision. Maybe we can too.

Choosing to fire is not, of course, an 'I win' button for MAGA and Trump. It takes a lot of force to hold a country of 300m by arms alone and it is easy to imagine Trump swallowed whole by the outrage of people seeing that confrontation.

But the country would never be the same either way.

In that, dreadful, terrible moment, every black bloc protestor in the world is useless, but a line of concerned senior citizens, office workers and house-spouses is actually a 'harder' target.

And 'the soldiers stood aside' is the sentence in the history book that goes before 'and the regime fell.'

And if that happens, the fate of the republic may well end up resting on the decisions in the moment of some second lieutenant and his gaggle of tired, somewhat confused young - most of them will be terribly young - soldiers.

Do they attack, do they beat down or shoot that grandma?

...and eventually, I see him giving the order to use force to disperse protests and assemblies, lawful and otherwise. He wanted to do it in 2020.

And I see Hegseth relaying that order forward, where other, better men - there are few worse - refused in 2020.

I feel like Buford in those opening scenes of Gettysburg, seeing how things must play out and yet desperately hoping we can avoid them playing out.

I see Trump invoking the insurrection act, without pretext, to avoid being blocked by the courts, so he can confront protests with troops...

This is correct, in part - as the grim, military historian in me feels the need to note - it is psychologically much harder to get soldiers to open fire on people they view as 'respectable.'

And I dread, with grim increasingly certainty, that we are headed to a point where that matters.

protests against this government should include white Boomer grandmothers who meet for pilates class, get a pitcher of mimosas & walk together to the public space

we need people in the street who think everyone can talk their way out of a speeding ticket, they're key to winning

the failure to engage even in modest speculation about what we are seeing is nothing less than an collective agreement to protect the president

The difference bet the way the press handled Biden’s vs Trump’s health issues, as well as the standard to which they hold his conduct is one of the greatest scandals in the history of journalism.

Their conduct, and the knowledge they’ve done tremendous damage to their profession, should shame them.

he has been talking obsessively about the afterlife for some time, he is missing for chunks of time, his aides are trying harder than usual to show he’s fit, his public appearances show someone in visible physical decline, and jd vance talked impromptu about being prepared to assume office

Trump: "I don't think there's anything that's gonna get me in heaven. I think I'm not maybe heaven bound. I may be in heaven right now as we fly on Air Force One. I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to make heaven."

President Harry Truman addressed a joint session of Congress #TDIH in 1948 to appeal for passage of the Marshall Plan. The Soviets added pressure as the House considered the proposals with the April Crisis that presaged the Berlin Blockade and Airlift. Baltimore Sun, April 2, 1948. #history #OTD

Without US help the USSR was forced to fight with Nazi tanks in spyglass range of the Kremlin and reaching the Volga.

ww2 was won by socialism not liberalism. liberalism helped. the soviets faced the vast majority of german forces and paid an enormous price.

also, if the u.s. hadn't been moved by fear of socialist revolution to do the new deal, we probably fall to fascism in the 1930's and join hitler.

Yeah, and it's weird that everybody accepts this as true without qualification but it's the same people who keep making other mistaken statements about the behavior of the poor in their own countries.

Revolutionary LARPers hate it because it blows up the myth of revolutionary violence as the authentic voice of the dispossessed and reactionaries hate it because it's a solid reminder that revolutionaries are often class/social background compatriots.

I walked from Uptown through Edgewater up to Devon this afternoon and there was someone with a whistle every few blocks. Cyclists with whistles were patrolling alleys.

One thing I want you to take from videos like this is the absolute cacophony of whistles and screams of "GET THE FUCK OUT OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD" from people in the streets and in buildings. And more and more people are at that point every day.
