The federal government shutdown has reached a tipping point. On November 1, people across the United States will lose access to food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP. The choice by the USDA to not access the $6 billion contingency reserve is deliberate.

On Threads, the usual suspects are telling ppl about to lose SNAP benefits to just start a garden. As a gardener, I had to laugh. You need at LEAST an acre of land to feed a family of 4. Start-up costs are enormous. But yes, subsistence farming on the balcony of your rental apartment is the answer

Instead of directing states to issue partial SNAP payments to cover the gap, the feds told them to shut the system off. Starting Nov. 1, SNAP EBT cards won’t reload and after Oct. 31, any unused benefits will be frozen. Please make sure those who rely on them know.

It’s hard to convey just how much Chicagoans are mobilizing against ICE. Don’t want to downplay the harm, or make it seem like a fair fight. But in neighborhoods across this city, ICE is getting chased by people blowing whistles and shouting. People are running TOWARD ICE to protect their neighbors.

Families are already hanging by a thread, but the sad truth is it’s about to get a lot worse when SNAP benefits don’t go out in November.

It’s time to find our local food banks and help out with donations and volunteer hours if you are able.

Biggest lesson from contributing to a local food pantry for five years: Small donors can never match what the federal government can provide. So much rot leads to Reagan, but especially on the food front. System is totally rigged & farmers are gonna get screwed, too.
