This cannot just be about healthcare. The existing constitutional system hangs in the balance. The rule of law is now baked into this shutdown in a huge way.

President Trump on Wednesday signed a memorandum expanding his administration’s authority to repurpose unspent federal funds to pay members of the military during the government shutdown, escalating his challenge to the authority of Congress on spending matters.

The Arizona Young Republicans finally put out their own statement and they’re standing by those names in the Politico article and condemned Gavin Wax & those who criticized their members. They also thank JD Vance, Steven Crowder and Matt Walsh for defending their hateful commentary as “edgy jokes.”
Phoenix, AZ

ARIZONA YOUNG REPUBLICANS TEDERATION
Official Statement from the Arizona Young Republicans Federation
The Arizona Young Republicans firmly reject any involvement in the ongoing political witch hunt targeting fellow Young Republican members. As an organization, we stand for due process, transparency, and fairness, not mob-style condemnation driven by political opportunism or personal agendas.
It is disheartening to witness the double standard applied by many critics. While certain voices within our own movement have been quick to condemn, many of these same individuals have overlooked or ignored deeply concerning rhetoric and actions on the political left-including public celebrations of the tragic death of Charlie Kirk and Jay Jones, calling for the death of family. This kind of selective outrage undermines efforts to address real issues in good faith.
While serious questions remain about the authenticity and context of the private group chat messages in question, we acknowledge that some of the language reportedly shared does not reflect the professionalism, judgment, or values we uphold. We express our sincere regret and unequivocally condemn any rhetoric that could be interpreted as sympathetic to Nazi ideology. Such language is reprehensible and has no place in our organization, our movement, or our country. As young leaders in the conservative movement, we have a responsibility to hold ourselves to the highest standards, even in private or informal settings. We are also deeply concerned by the circumstances under which these private messages were obtained and disseminated. Allegations that this material was selectively edited and released under coercive means are serious and merit thorough examination. In light of these allegations, we believe the reported actions of Gavin Wax are incompatible with the trust and integrity expected of those in Republican leadership. The Arizona Young Republicans Federation is actively seeking legal counsel to review these matters and will pursue all appropriate options moving forward.
We are disappointed that, rather than reaching out to seek the truth or engage in dialogue, the National Young Republican leadership chose to issue a public condemnation without so much as a single call to our organization. This lack of communication reflects a troubling disregard for unity and due process, and raises serious concerns about loyalty and leadership within our movement.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to building a Republican movement rooted in truth, loyalty, and integrity. We will not abandon our members in the face of politically motivated attacks, nor will we allow false narratives to divide us.
We would like to thank Vice-President Vance, Steven Crowder, Matt Walsh, and all others who pointed out the obvious: while the right makes edgy jokes, the left has a serious violence problem.

Q: This has been reported for a while. Cory Mills was accused of beating a girlfriend in his DC apt. Are you concerned about these allegations?

JOHNSON: You have to ask Rep. Mills about that. He's been a faithful colleague. I don't know the details. Let's talk about things that are really serious

Feels quaint, almost cliché, to say this about a Trump action, but just for the record:

This is all illegal, the President can't simply disregard the laws passed and agencies created by Congress, and both Vought & Trump would be impeached if the Constitution or the rule of law mattered to the GOP.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court appeared likely to further restrict the power of the Voting Rights Act to remedy discrimination — but a majority also appeared unwilling to declare all “race-based redistricting” unconstitutional, as Louisiana had asked the court to do.
Supreme Court likely to further diminish — but not end — Voting Rights Act cases
A majority of the justices didn't appear willing to hold that all "race-based redistricting" is unconstitutional, as Louisiana wanted. But how they'll get there was unclear.

It's "far from normal for an administration to fire line-level civilian employees during a government shutdown as a way to punish the opposing political party."

From a judge's TRO blocking Trump's mass firings under cover of the shutdown
It is also far from normal for an administration to fire line-level civilian employees during a
government shutdown as a way to punish the opposing political party. But this is precisely what President Trump has announced he is doing, by taking to social media on the second day of the
shutdown to post: “I have a meeting today with Russ Vought, he of PROJECT 2025 Fame, to determine which of the many Democrat Agencies, most of which are a political SCAM, he recommends to be cut, and whether or not those cuts will be temporary or permanent. I can’t believe
the Radical Left Democrats gave me this unprecedented opportunity.”

This memo is ultra vires. The president does not have the power to pay the army without congressional appropriation. Any such payment is a felony, and everyone involved must go to prison.

There are so many obvious constitutional violations in this story. It is enraging.
There is no war, there is no foreign invasion, there is nothing that justify it. This is a choice to create a military presence that will brutalize residents of cities that do not support the President.

DHS is so off the deep end that a spokesperson appears to be using the line “That is a 40mm launcher that fires beanbags and rubber projectiles” like that excuses what we’re seeing.

Rubber bullets can kill people, even when they’re not fired at point blank range.

Here's the thing. We still have the power (probably) to say that this image must not be what America is. We still have the power to say "fuck no, we refuse to allow this to be what the streets of America look like." Attend a "No Kings" rally this Saturday. And then vote in 2026.

There's literally no reason for Congress to exist if any random freak in the presidential orbit can nullify laws and seize federal funds. All of this is plainly illegal, but Mike Johnson leads the most corrupt Congress in US history (and by a wide margin.)

Indiana University cuts IDS print entirely, hours after firing student media director
By IDS staff
Oct 15, 2025 1:23 pm · Updated Oct 15, 2025 1:23 pm

IU previously directed the Indiana Daily Student to stop printing news coverage in our newspaper. Upon pushback, the university fully cut print, including our special editions. The IDS was not involved in the decision.

Media School Dean David Tolchinsky sent the order to IDS leadership in an email responding to its appeal that the school not censor the newspaper. And the dean attributed the decision to “the campus.” He has not yet responded to a message for clarification.

NEW @motherjones.com: Nobody in that GOP group chat praising Hitler or making racist comments was a “kid,” as JD Vance claimed today

I tracked down their ages. (Weirdly, it seems nobody else did.)

Eight of the 11 in the group chat range from 24 to 35. Ages of others are unclear.

But… no “kids”!
No one in the GOP Hitler chat was a "kid"
We checked. Sorry, JD Vance.
